Deborah: The Judge Witness

Episode 2:

Deborah – The Prophetic Judge Witness

Welcome back, truth-seekers, to another powerfulepisode of the “Witness Series.” I’m your host, Fr. Veigas Dominic SVD, andtoday, we’re journeying into a compelling story from the Old Testament, featuring a woman who served as a judge, a prophetess, and a military leader. Her life speaks volumes about courage, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

In this second episode of Season 7, we shine a lighton Deborah, “The Prophetic Judge Witness.” In a time when Israel was oppressedand seemingly leaderless, God raised Deborah to bring justice, declare Hiswill, and lead His people to victory. Her story is a testament to God’s abilityto use anyone, regardless of gender or societal expectations, to fulfill Hispurposes.

Deborah’s life resonates with us today because sheexemplifies what it means to step into God’s calling with boldness, even whenothers hesitate. Her witness reminds us that authentic leadership flows fromdivine wisdom and a deep trust in God’s power.

Today, we’ll unpack Deborah’s life, her powerfulmessage as a prophetic judge, and how her example can inspire our acts ofwitness. Let’s get started.

Who was Deborah?

Imagine a time in Israel’s history when chaos reigned. The people had once again turned away from God. As a result, they wereoppressed by King Jabin of Canaan and his formidable army commander, Sisera, who boasted 900 iron chariots. It was a bleak period, marked by fear anddespair.

Yet, amid this darkness, God raised an extraordinarywoman named Deborah. She was unique for her time, serving not just as aprophetess who delivered God’s messages, but also as a judge – aspiritual and civic leader to whom the Israelites came for counsel and justice.Judges chapter 4, verse 4 clearly states, “Now Deborah, a prophet, the wifeof Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.” She held court under a palmtree, dispensing wisdom and resolving disputes, an oasis of divine order in achaotic land.

But Deborah’s calling extended even further. When itwas time for Israel to confront their oppressors, God called her to summonBarak, the military commander, to lead the charge. Barak, however, hesitated, saying he would only go if Deborah went with him. Without batting an eye,Deborah agreed, showing incredible courage and faith. Judges 4:9 records herresolute response: “Certainly I will go with you. But because of the course youare taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera intothe hands of a woman.”

True to her prophecy, God granted Israel a decisivevictory, and Sisera was indeed defeated by a woman, Jael, who courageouslydrove a tent peg through his temple. Deborah’s leadership was instrumental, notby wielding a sword herself, but by fearlessly declaring God’s will, inspiringa hesitant army, and trusting entirely in God for the outcome.

After the victory, Deborah and Barak sang amagnificent song of praise, recorded in Judges chapter 5, celebratingGod’s power and the faithfulness of those who responded to His call. This songnot only glorifies God but also commemorates the valor of women, such as Jael, who played crucial roles in history.

Hello and welcome to 2 Minutes with the Lord, our podcast where we explore ancient parables and their relevance in our modern lives. I am your host, Fr. Dominic Veigas SVD, and in today's episode, we will be discussing one of the shortest yet most profound parables, The Parable of the Mustard Seed. Despite its age, this story holds much significance for us even today. It speaks volumes about the potential and growth that can come from even the smallest of beginnings. So, let us delve deeper into how something as insignificant as a tiny mustard seed can teach us about the strength and impact of our actions. This parable can be found in the Gospel of Matthew 13:31-32. Jesus tells the story of a mustard seed, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so the birds come and perch in its branches." This metaphor for the Kingdom of Heaven beautifully illustrates how small beginnings can lead to expansive and impactful outcomes.
