Mailbag: We Answer Your Questions About Spielberg vs. Netflix and "Film Twitter"

On the March 6, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor in Chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film senior writer Ben Pearson, and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to answer some listener emails in the Mail Bag. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). In The Mailbag: Austin from Dallas Texas writes in “I thought I would chime in. I lean towards Spielberg’s side on this. For me it’s not about Netflix or Amazon not being able to release a movie and it not being good. The Oscars to me is for a particular medium just like the Emmy’s. Netflix was using to me a loophole intended for shorts and indie films to their advantage. I feel they should have to do a wide release of their films to qualify. Idk how you put rules into place to not exclude indie films though. Maybe have it based on budget? To me Netflix movies are equivalent to straight to VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray. Those would not be considered for Oscars so why should they. Maybe it’s time to add a streaming category?” Langdon Kessner writes in “Hi Peter, Big fan of the site and the podcast. I'd like to offer a defense of Spielberg, and I'm honestly shocked that so many people are against him, specifically #FilmTwitter. Watching the argument go from "Spielberg hates Netflix" (which is not true) to "Spielberg doesn't care about minorities" (also not true) was maddening. For starters, it's important to note (and I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned on the podcast), Spielberg was a huge part of getting Five Came Back, a documentary, produced on Netflix. Author Mark Harris himself stated it would not exist without him. So this idea that Spielberg just hates Netflix and is a cartoon grandpa yelling at clouds is ridiculous (not saying you guys pushed this idea, but social media did). The issue here is the way Netflix treats their movies, and more importantly, the theaters. Not many of them have been given a proper theatrical release. And even the ones that do come with rules from Netflix. For the few theaters that were able to get Roma in 70mm, Netflix had a lot of rules that made it difficult for them to screen it. It had to be shown in Dolby Atmos, and it could only be screened from Thursday to Sunday. I know this because I wrote a series of articles on independent movie theaters in Boston, and still occasionally talk to the managers. All have said that Netflix is extremely cagey and reticent to conversation when it comes to showing their movies in theaters. Also important to note (and I was also disappointed this wasn't mentioned): Amazon Prime does not do this. They have a 90-day theatrical window and nobody, least of all Spielberg, is mad at them for it. That's the point Spielberg is making. That Netflix doesn't give their films a proper theatrical release, and instead just a token one so they can qualify for the Oscars. You guys mentioned on the podcast that it feels like elitists saying "No, you can't be in our club". To me, it feels like an first-year employee demanding a promotion without going through the ranks. And Joseph Kahn made a great point (I won't rehash the whole thing here), but "Oscars are meant to promote the theatrical experience. So Netflix releasing a movie in one theater and claiming they should be celebrated with an Oscar the same way like BlacKkKlansman or even yes, Green Book, is not remotely fair." Basically, if Netflix followed the Amazon Prime model, there'd be no issue. But they don't and prioritize home viewing which is television. A line does need to be drawn and this only happened because Netflix blurred the line between film and television. If they can afford to dump $8 billion in content, they can certainly afford a theatrical release. Sorry that I wrote a lot, but this debate has infuriated me. Two corporations are going to head-to-head yet Netflix is somehow the underdog? Ugh. This has nothing to do with quality of Netflix (which is Osca Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The biggest jump in quality on disc vs streaming is audio! Currently, ALL streaming platforms are lossy. An average 2hr film is around 500 megabytes lossy for streaming (equivalent to crappy mp3s) vs 5 GIGAbytes lossless (basically identical to studio masters, with no loss at all). So if Wes has full range speakers, you can tell movie soundtracks on Blu-rays have 10x more information than any streaming platforms.2. As for video quality, bitrate-wise the most famous example is the Game of Thrones episode, “The Long Night,” which was a pixelated dark mess on HBO Max, but on 4k disc using a properly calibrated Dolby Vision display, you won’t see pixelization nor macroblocking but pristine high quality hdr image. The biggest selling feature of 4k is hdr!3. At the time of this email, Gemini Man (and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk) are the only two titles on 4k disc encoded with 60fps dolby vision. Every other 4k disc is 24fps. Currently, 4k discs do not allow for higher than 60fps but can potentially be updated to be variable or 120fps, but as of today, it tops out at 60fps.All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about some of the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked in the show notes. You can subscribe to /Film Weekly on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com. This, I think, explains why he opted to introduce Supergirl prior to the credits rolling on Superman. As for the way in which Supergirl is depicted in her cameo, her upcoming film is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series, which begins with Supergirl getting drunk on a planet with a red sun as alluded to in her cameo. With regards to Lobo’s role in the Supergirl movie, I don’t think we can really say with much certainty that Kara and Lobo will be “teaming up”. Lobo was not in the Woman of Tomorrow comics. While King initially planned to use Lobo in that run, Lobo didn’t wind up making it in when all was said and done. However, based on those comics I think it’s pretty easy to surmise how Lobo might be incorporated into the film adaptation, and it’s not as an ally to Kara. I think that Lobo will sort of be competing with Supergirl to get to Krem (the big bad of the comic and the movie) first to collect a bounty on him. Lobo is an antihero, so perhaps by the end of the film he will wind up on Supergirl’s side, but I think he will mostly be an antagonist in the movie.I was shocked to hear you guys weren’t fond of the song choice during the Mr. Terrific fight scene. I think that song is lovely. It feels like it could’ve come right off the 50 First Dates soundtrack.(~26:06) Wes from Dallas Fort-Worth wrote in and said:Just wanted to get some help with selecting physical media. I would like to get back into buying Blu-rays but this time, I plan to be very selective and get only the best quality versions. When shopping for them, I see that it has become a mess as there’s just basic movies on Blu-ray, there’s special feature Blu-rays, and then there’s those like the upcoming Tombstone re-release that is probably the best quality you’ll be able to find it in.So my questions are:1. What do I look for on the box to know that this is actually the very best version of a film and that I’m not just buying a standard copy that was out on Blu-ray.2. Could you do a ranking of the best Blu-rays that have the definitive versions of a movie?3. With bandwidth speeds increasing, do you think streaming from Netflix or iTunes will get to the same quality as these Blu-ray’s?4. Off topic - any chance we’ll ever get to see the 120 fps version of Gemini Man somewhere, especially since many TVs now support this? All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about some of the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked in the show notes. You can subscribe to /Film Weekly on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com.
