Paramount, Universal & Disney News From CinemaCon 2023

On the April 27, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the latest film and TV news, including all the news coming out of the Paramount, Universal and Disney presentations at CinemaCon.

Opening Banter:

In The News:

  • New Street Fighter Movie Will Be Directed By Talk To Me’s Danny And Michael Philippou
  • Paramount:
  • Smile 2 officially announced.
  • The animated Transformers film directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) is officially titled Transformers One. Chris Hemsworth will be voicing young Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry will voice young Megatron, Keegan-Michael Key is voicing young Bumblebee, Scarlett Johansson is Elita, Jon Hamm is Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne is Alpha Trion.
  • The animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie follows Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Toph all in their adult age.
  • Rihanna will star in the next Smurfs movie directed by Chris Miller (Puss in Boots).
  • A Quiet Place: Day One takes place in New York. The film follows Lupita Nyong’o as a mother trying to survive following the alien invasion. Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff also star.

We’re going to take a break, and we’ll be right back.

  • Universal
  • First footage from Wicked looked expensive - huge scale with some of the biggest practical sets. Jon M. Chu said they planted 9 million real multi-colored tulips in one set.
  • Fast X: Part Two will hit theaters sometime in 2025. Vin Diesel claims Fast franchise is the longest running franchise with the same actors?
  • Kung Fu Panda 4 will be directed by Mike Mitchell (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Trolls, Shrek Forever). The plot was revealed: Po receives a promotion and has to decide who will be the next Dragon Warrior. Po meets a female Fox warrior named Chen to possibly be his successor. The pair don’t get along at first but must learn how to put their differences aside to battle the Chameleon, a sorceress who can summon every single villain from past films back from the dead.
  • The cast was announced for Illumination’s next movie Migration. Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Keegan-Michael Key, Awkwafina and Danny DeVito. This is written by The White Lotus creator Mike White. Its a road trip family comedy but with ducks.
  • Disney
  • Gareth Edwards next movie True Love has been retitled The Creator. John David Washington plays a man who has to protects a non-human child (android?) during an apocalyptic war between humans and Artificial intelligence. Very visually stunning, District 9 comparisons.
