2 Kings 4 Explained: Elisha’s Miracles & the God Who Provides Life | Episode 340

2 Kings 4 explained. What does 2 Kings 4 teach about God's compassion, provision, and power over death? In this episode we explore four remarkable miracles through Elisha: the widow whose oil never runs out, the Shunammite woman whose son is promised and later restored to life, the poisoned stew at Gilgal, and the feeding of a hundred men with only a small amount of food.

The chapter begins with a widow of one of the sons of the prophets crying out to Elisha because her creditors are coming to take her two children as servants. Elisha asks what she has in her house, and she has only a jar of oil. God multiplies the oil until every available vessel is filled, allowing her to pay her debts and live from what remains. The miracle demonstrates that God's provision can begin with what appears insignificant in human hands.

We then meet a wealthy Shunammite woman who generously provides hospitality for Elisha. Recognising his calling, she prepares a small room for him. In response to her kindness, Elisha announces that she will have a son despite her husband's old age. Yet years later, the child suddenly dies in the field. The woman refuses to surrender to despair and travels to Elisha, who comes and prays to the Lord. After a dramatic encounter, the child sneezes seven times and opens his eyes. The God who gave the child life demonstrates His authority over death.

The chapter continues with two further miracles. During a famine, Elisha saves a pot of stew that has been poisoned by an unknown plant, and later he feeds one hundred men with twenty loaves of barley and fresh grain. Even after everyone eats, food remains. Once again, God's provision exceeds human expectations.

2 Kings 4 presents Elisha as a prophet through whom God repeatedly brings provision, restoration, healing, and life. The miracles are not ultimately about Elisha's greatness—they reveal the compassion and power of the Lord. God sees the widow's desperation, the Shunammite mother's grief, the community's hunger, and the danger facing His people.

Ultimately, this chapter points powerfully to Jesus Christ. Like Elisha, Jesus provides miraculous food, raises children from death, and demonstrates God's compassion toward those in desperate need. But Christ is greater: Elisha prayed for the dead to live, while Jesus possesses authority over life itself. He declares, "I am the resurrection and the life." The multiplying oil and bread point toward the One who abundantly provides for His people, while the restored Shunammite child foreshadows the greater resurrection accomplished through Christ.

This episode includes a clear explanation of 2 Kings 4, practical applications for Bible study and preaching, and cross-references for deeper study.
