The Bipolar Sleep Rule That Isn't Really About Sleep

The Bipolar Sleep Rule That Isn't Really About Sleep

The sleep rule that protects your mood in bipolar disorder isn't the hour you go to bed — it's the hour you get up, held steady every single day.

Social Rhythm Therapy in one usable tool: five daily anchors, why regularity beats duration, and the wake anchor that holds them all.

You've been told "get more sleep." It's not wrong, but the research points at something more specific and more doable than a number of hours: keep your rhythms steady. Your internal clock takes its cues from daily "timekeepers" — zeitgebers — like when you wake, eat, and first talk to another person. In bipolar disorder that clock is unusually sensitive, and when the timekeepers scatter (a red-eye flight, a newborn, shift work, the clocks changing), it gets knocked loose — one of the most reliable ways to tip toward an episode. That's the idea behind IPSRT, built by psychiatrist Ellen Frank: protect the rhythms, protect the mood. This works with your medication, not instead of it.

The tool is five daily anchors kept at roughly the same time: out of bed, first contact, main activity, evening meal, bedtime. Not perfect — just regular. The keystone is your wake time: anchor the morning and the whole day tends to fall in behind it, which is why sleeping in to "catch up" is a small dose of self-inflicted jet lag. Two more moves: regularity beats duration (a steady seven does more than a chaotic nine), and guard the rhythm hardest when life tries to break it. One honest limit — this is a lever, not a cure, and it works best as steady, boring maintenance built in the calm.
