2 Kings 18 Explained: Hezekiah’s Faith & Assyria’s Threat | Episode 354

2 Kings 18 explained. What does 2 Kings 18 teach about trusting God when powerful enemies surround us? In this episode we unpack the reign of Hezekiah, his sweeping reforms, the destruction of idolatry in Judah, and the terrifying Assyrian invasion that tests whether Jerusalem will truly trust the Lord.

Hezekiah becomes king of Judah after the disastrous reign of Ahaz, and the contrast is immediate. He does what is right in the eyes of the Lord, following the example of David. He removes the high places, smashes the sacred pillars, cuts down the Asherah, and even destroys the bronze serpent Moses had made because the people had begun worshipping it as an idol.

The chapter describes Hezekiah's faith in remarkable terms: he trusts in the Lord and holds fast to Him. Unlike the kings who repeatedly relied on foreign alliances, Hezekiah refuses to submit to Assyria and instead places his confidence in God.

Yet faith does not mean Hezekiah's life becomes easy.

The Assyrian king Sennacherib invades Judah and captures many of its fortified cities. Jerusalem itself is threatened. Sennacherib sends his officials to confront Hezekiah's representatives, and the Rabshakeh delivers a devastating psychological attack. He mocks Judah's confidence in God, argues that no other nation's gods have been able to save them, and even claims that the Lord Himself commanded Assyria to destroy Judah.

The Assyrian speech is designed to make God's people doubt whether trusting Him is worth it.

This creates the central tension of the chapter: Will Judah trust what it can see, or trust the God it cannot see?

The Rabshakeh points to Assyria's overwhelming military power and Judah's apparent weakness. Hezekiah's officials respond by remaining silent, because the king has commanded them not to answer. The chapter ends without resolving the crisis, deliberately leaving the reader waiting for God's response in the chapters that follow.

2 Kings 18 therefore marks one of the great moments of faith in the history of Judah. Hezekiah does not deny the reality of the Assyrian threat. The army is real. The cities have fallen. Jerusalem is genuinely surrounded. But God's people are called to recognise that the Lord is greater than the circumstances confronting them.

The chapter also contains an important warning about religious objects. The bronze serpent was originally given by God for a specific purpose, yet Israel eventually turned it into an object of worship. Even something associated with a genuine act of God can become an idol when the gift replaces the Giver.

Ultimately, 2 Kings 18 points to Jesus Christ, the greater and perfectly faithful King. Hezekiah brings genuine reform to Judah, but his faith is still imperfect. Jesus, however, perfectly trusts the Father under the greatest possible pressure. He faces Satan's temptations, human opposition, and ultimately the cross without abandoning His mission.

The Assyrian army surrounds Jerusalem and demands surrender; Jesus enters Jerusalem knowing that death awaits Him, yet He willingly surrenders Himself—not to His enemies, but to the Father's will. Through His death and resurrection, Christ wins the victory that no earthly army could ever achieve.

2 Kings 18 asks us a timeless question: when everything around us says that God cannot save, will we believe the voice of fear—or the promises of the Lord?

This episode includes a clear explanation of 2 Kings 18, practical applications for Bible study and preaching, and cross-references for deeper study.
