2 Kings 22 Explained: Josiah Finds God’s Word & Begins a Great Revival | Episode 358

2 Kings 22 explained. What does 2 Kings 22 teach about the power of God's Word, genuine repentance, and what happens when people rediscover Scripture after generations of spiritual decline? In this episode we unpack the reign of Josiah, the rediscovery of the Book of the Law, and the king's response when he realises how far Judah has wandered from God.

Josiah becomes king of Judah at just eight years old. Unlike his father Amon and grandfather Manasseh, Josiah does what is right in the eyes of the Lord and walks in the ways of David without turning aside to the right or left.

Eighteen years into his reign, Josiah orders the repair of the temple. Money collected for the restoration is entrusted to workers who use it to restore the neglected house of God.

But during the repairs, something extraordinary happens.

Hilkiah the high priest discovers the Book of the Law in the temple. It is brought to Josiah and read aloud. When the king hears the words of God's law, he tears his clothes in grief.

Why?

Because Josiah realises that Judah has not merely become spiritually weak—it has violated the covenant. The people have been living in direct rebellion against the commands of God.

This moment reveals the power of Scripture. God's Word does not simply give Josiah information. It exposes reality. The king suddenly sees Judah's spiritual condition through God's perspective rather than through the traditions and practices that had become normal.

Josiah sends his officials to inquire of the Lord through the prophetess Huldah. Her message is sobering: judgment is indeed coming upon Judah because of its idolatry and rebellion. The consequences of generations of sin cannot simply be erased.

But there is also mercy.

Because Josiah humbled himself when he heard God's Word, the Lord promises that he will die before the coming disaster and will not personally witness the judgment that will fall upon Jerusalem.

2 Kings 22 therefore presents a powerful picture of revival beginning with rediscovery of God's Word. Josiah does not begin by trying to make Judah feel better. He begins by listening to Scripture, recognising sin, grieving over it, and seeking the Lord.

The chapter also reminds us that religious familiarity can become dangerous. God's temple was still standing. Religious activity was still happening. But the people had lost sight of the very Word that defined their covenant relationship with God.

Ultimately, 2 Kings 22 points toward Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

Josiah discovers the written Word of God and responds with repentance. Jesus comes as the living Word of God, perfectly revealing the Father and perfectly fulfilling the Law. Josiah can postpone Judah's judgment, but he cannot remove it. Jesus goes further—He bears judgment Himself on behalf of His people.

There is also a striking connection between Josiah's temple restoration and Christ. Josiah repairs a neglected temple, but Jesus declares that His own body is the true Temple and then allows that body to be destroyed and raised three days later.

The message of 2 Kings 22 is therefore deeply relevant today: we cannot experience genuine spiritual renewal without allowing God's Word to expose, confront, and transform us.

Josiah's revival begins when the forgotten Book is opened.

And the greater revival comes when the living Word, Jesus Christ, opens our hearts to God.

This episode includes a clear explanation of 2 Kings 22, practical applications for Bible study and preaching, and cross-references for deeper study.
