Ep. 952: Leaving Your Successful Outdoor Company - Davis Smith

Ep. 952: Leaving Your Successful Outdoor Company - Davis Smith

Davis is the founder and CEO of Cotopaxi, an outdoor gear brand with a humanitarian mission of creating “gear for good”. Davis is also an adventurer who has floated down the Amazon on a self-made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea. Davis grew up in Latin America and currently lives in Utah with his wife and four children.

Here’s why we’re talking to him on AS though, he’s leaving his role as CEO for a 3-year mission in Brazil. Davis and his family have answered the call to move to Brazil this summer to serve as missionaries.

We often hear of folks leaving their corporate jobs, or school to start a career in the outdoors, or how they took the path less taken and never looked back. But what about those who start that company, and then have an unexpected detour once things are going well? It’ll be exciting to follow up with Davis in the coming years.

Ep. 1061: Circumnavigate the US by Bike & Kayak - Revisited - Renata Chlumska

Ep. 1061: Circumnavigate the US by Bike & Kayak - Revisited - Renata Chlumska

Originally published July 25, 2022Renata is a legendary Czech-born adventurer and mountaineer. She was the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the world’s “25 adventure goddesses." In 2005, after the death of her partner, Göran Kropp (also a well-known adventurer), she embarked on what she calls the "Around America Adventure". She would circumnavigate the lower 48 US states by bike and kayak. When biking, she would pull her kayak behind her with a set of two wheels and while kayaking, she would ship her bike ahead of her at the next portion of the trip.  She started in Seattle and paddled to San Diego, bicycled San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, continued kayaking around Florida to Eastport, Maine, and then bicycled back to Seattle across the northern portion of the US. Through this experience she became the first person to circumnavigate the US this way. This is a wild, unique, and beautiful story of what a true adventure really means.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 1057: The Longest Annual Paddle Race in the US - Revisited - Greg Wingo

Ep. 1057: The Longest Annual Paddle Race in the US - Revisited - Greg Wingo

You might not think of Alabama as holding many records in the world of endurance races (at least I didn’t), however, you’d be wrong! Alabama is home to the Great Alabama 650, a 650-mile paddle race down the Alabama Scenic River Trail going from the northern part of the state out to the Gulf of Mexico. Racers face whitewater, battle tidewater currents, and hike around a dozen dams in an effort to reach the ocean and are expected to finish between 7-10 days. Today we’re talking with the AL650 race director, Greg Wingo to learn just how challenging a race like this is to plan as well as compete in. Also, Adventure Sports Podcast is now a sponsor of Greg’s other race, Last Paddler Standing. Mason will be commentating during the LPS in December. To learn more about the Great Alabama 650: https://www.alabamascenicrivertrail.com/great-alabama-650/To learn more about the Last Paddler Standing: https://lastpaddlerstanding.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Originally published June 21, 2022Elise is a runner, author and all-round outdoors lover. In 2016 she became the first woman and youngest person to run self-supported around the coast of the UK – an adventure she was completely unqualified for, as an unexperienced runner whose athletic career consisted of one horrendous marathon dressed as a Crayola crayon. She is the author of best-selling book Coasting, which tells the story of her adventure and aims to show others that you don’t need to be the best at something to achieve something big.
