July 2023 TikTok Trends Part 2

Summer is slowly coming to an end, and with Labor Day upon us Dena and Catalina open up with @astoldbyginger’s discussion of ending the summer “FTB.” In the algorithm segment Catalina realizes she is fully on the hair side of the app, discussing videos by @styledbychanning and @chandlertate1109 and the girls chat about creator @leahbarzz’s attempt to get a discussion going via stitches about “Saturday Scaries.” Dena shares a video she was served about taking a helicopter to the airport @kevindroniak, and the transportation theme continues with creator @msbrijanai’s account of her experience taking the driver-less Waymo car to work. The girls also discuss (and firmly disagree) with @yevit’s supposition that there’s no better feeling than being a freshman at NYU, and Dena recaps some more New York content including unfortunate coverage of a water main break (@stopitparis) and the day in the life of a US Open Ball Girl (@schrodingersbrat). Stitches are on trend, from @meolah’s request to know what girls in Wisconsin are up to (answered by @ms.newb00ty and @autumnacord, and @lblikes’s discussion of unfortunate graphic design decisions, with an amazing response by @lisarachnid. Their content creator of the week is @amandamccants, Dena speculates that Jay-Z will join TikTok, and Catalina reflects on a tomato cocktail featured on one of her favorite food creator accounts, @babytamago. Big news in the 2 Old 4 TikTok world! At the top of the episode Dena and Catalina discuss how they will now be releasing WEEKLY episodes. That’s right, they’re finally bringing you all the latest trends and commentary at the pace the algorithm demands (or something more like it). For topics first up is Rushtok, which just wrapped up, including videos by @bamarushtok1 and some of this “season’s” most well-known characters; @on_thedaily_with_morgan and  @bellagracegates. Catalina’s algorithm knows she refuses to learn the NATO phonetic alphabet, like @nicollevieira04, and Dena discusses the one-day-that-changed-your-life-forever trend. The content creator of the week is @amandashultz_ and the ladies also highlight @robhomecook for a very accurate ranking of tinned fish options. Lots of learning on TikTok this week: Catalina shares @somm_vivant’s discussion of universal wine glasses and Dena discusses The Happy Urbanist’s explanation of guardrails and the ensuing parody by @ethangarz. To close, the girls discuss the concept of going to the club in the morning as introduced by @marthagraeff, wife of a DJ. On today’s pod Catalina and Dena start off with their weekend in NYC which takes them to the topic of the Europe Test, described by @emmatopp. The algorithm is also serving Catalina ice cream (@asmrdecomida) and Dena is learning about the concept of “girl math” from creators like @fvhzm, @samjamessssss, and @channingstatum. After an unfortunate update about the Attenzione pickpocket lady they delve into some newer audio trends, including @madelineargy’s plea to find out what DJs really do which was, of course, turned into a remix featured in videos by creators like @loudluxury. Additional audio trends include the European dance song by @kylegordonisgreat and the so-called “Ken Milkshake” by @anikahjayne. Their content creator spotlight of the week is @mollybmcpherson and @alabamabarker, daughter of Travis Barker, is featured as the latest celeb drawing attention on the app. For food and drink trends the girls discuss the omelet from the Bear (@gourmetgab) and their very disparate feelings on a McDonald's ice cream creation. Finally, they wrap up with a quick chat regarding @therealqueenofversailles who has returned to the public eye full force and is featuring a very confusing simulation of a private jet in her living room.
