Accessing Support Without Shame

Accessing Support Without Shame

Needing support is not something to be ashamed of.

For many people, saying “I need help” can feel harder thancontinuing to struggle alone. Fear of judgment, cultural expectations, pastexperiences, pride, stigma, and the pressure to always appear “strong” canprevent us from reaching out—even when we know we need support.

In this episode of Well Life Wednesday, hosts Cristy Hooper,LCMHCS and Iris Hooper, LCAS-A are joined by special guest SaranaHaire, Social Worker and author of Early Morning When I Rise for animportant conversation about Accessing Support Without Shame.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

• Why people experience shame around asking for help
• The emotional cost of suffering in silence
• Mental health stigma and barriers to receiving services
• How isolation can affect emotional wellness and recovery
• The difference between unhealthy dependence and healthy support
• What a healthy support system can look like
• Practical ways to communicate that you need help
• Using therapy, community resources, peer support, family, and other resources
• Breaking generational patterns of silence and hyper-independence
• Why you don't have to wait until you're in crisis to seek support
• How communities can create safer spaces for people to ask for help

One of the most important messages from this conversation is simple:

You don't have to go through it alone. Support changes lives.

There is strength in recognizing when you need additional support.Whether that means talking with someone you trust, connecting with a therapist, joining a support group, accessing community resources, or simply tellingsomeone, “I'm not okay right now,” reaching out can be an important steptoward healing.
