EDVINSSON LEAVES TOWN AND DETROIT RED WINGS SEASON PREVIEW ft. Max Bultman - Sept. 30th, 2026

Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson is skating in Sweden, still unsigned, two days before the home opener. Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit joins this Detroit Red Wings podcast for a season preview covering the Detroit Red Wings lineup, Dylan Larkin's trade request, & more.

(00:00) - Intro

(04:25) - Edvinsson Goes to Sweden
Simon Edvinsson is skating with Frolunda of the SHL, and the panel traces a summer of indecision from Steve Yzerman's July 15 removal as GM to Shawn Horcoff getting the interim GM job days before camp. Plus, how a layup deal became a contract standoff that complicates Alex DeBrincat's future, and the Elliotte Friedman report that Zach Werenski put Detroit on his no-fly list, & more.

(31:40) - Red Wings 23-Man Roster
Review of the roster announced Monday: William Wallinder looks like the odd man out once bodies return with Andreas Englund claimed off waivers. Todd McLellan calls Dylan Larkin day-to-day, will he play? Plus, what to make of Mazur, Anton Johansson, and others.

(40:20) - Forward Group Preview
With Andrew Copp potentially opening as the first-line center, so the panel sees a top-heavy group that may finish near the bottom of the NHL in scoring. Max predicts a Larkin trade by December 1, and Marco Kasper has to climb back up the lineup after ending exhibition play in the bottom six.

(1:03:25) - Defense Preview & Faulk Trade Talk
Anton Johansson's five exhibition assists and Axel Sandin-Pellikka's best preseason in a Red Wings jersey make the case for playing both every night. Justin Faulk, with a 15-team no-trade list, could be moved as early as November, and the panel weighs Larkin deals with Minnesota or a three-way with Montreal and Washington.

(1:20:05) - Gibson and Tarasov in Net
Starting goalie John Gibson and backup Daniil Tarasov are both in contract years; Max Bultman wants Michal Postava, now with the Grand Rapids Griffins, to get NHL games down the stretch if Detroit is out of contention.

(1:22:40) - Season Point Predictions
All four panelists have the Red Wings missing the playoffs, with point totals between 79 and 82. The crew also asks what really separates Detroit without Larkin from teams like the Seattle Kraken.

(1:26:40) - Overtime
Edvinsson can still sign an offer sheet, and the risk only grows once the season starts. Patrons also ask about hands-on owners, why Team USA players pass on Canadian markets, Lucas Raymond's ceiling and the league-wide shortage of centers.
