Toxic Empathy: The New Face of Christian Compassion

In this episode, John dives into the complexities of faith and power dynamics as he discusses the release of Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez's new book, "Live, Laugh, Love: The Secret History of White Christian Women and the World They Made." John and Dr. Du Mez explore how the seemingly innocuous phrase "live, laugh, love" masks a deeper narrative about submission, consumerism, and the intertwining of evangelical teachings with capitalism. They delve into the historical roots of these ideologies, tracing them back to 19th-century holiness theology and the impact it has had on generations of women.

John and Dr. Du Mez also examine the troubling relationship between Christian nationalism and the empowerment of women, highlighting how many women have been conditioned to accept authoritarian structures in their personal and communal lives. The conversation touches on the role of multi-level marketing in perpetuating these narratives and how the ideals of beauty and holiness are often intertwined with economic success.

Additionally, they discuss the implications of toxic empathy and the redefinition of compassion within religious communities, questioning how these shifts have led to a dangerous environment for those who challenge the status quo. With powerful insights and a critical lens, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersections of faith, gender, and power in contemporary society.
