Ep. 411 - When Being the Strong One Becomes the Problem w Natalie Bulger

Ep. 411 - When Being the Strong One Becomes the Problem w Natalie Bulger

What happens when being "the strong one" becomes the very thing keeping you from healing?

In this episode of the Hi Felicia Podcast, I sit down with Natalie Bulger for an honest conversation about trauma, grief, resilience, identity, people-pleasing, and what she calls the messy middle.

Natalie brings a unique perspective from her background in healthcare administration and social work across both the private and federal sectors, along with her own lived experiences of trauma and profound loss.

We talk about why so many of us become experts at managing the symptoms of our lives without ever asking what's underneath them.

Natalie opens up about experiencing unimaginable loss, growing up with a parent struggling with severe untreated mental health issues, becoming highly resilient at a young age, and eventually realizing that resilience can become its own kind of survival mechanism.

We also dive into being a chronic "yes" person, what happens when your identity becomes wrapped up in being useful to everyone else, and the moment Natalie realized she needed a mission that belonged to her.

In this conversation, we explore:

• The reality of living in "the messy middle"
• Why healing requires more than treating symptoms
• Grief that doesn't fit neatly into a timeline
• How childhood experiences can shape adult behaviors
• When resilience becomes hyper-independence
• People-pleasing and the hidden cost of always saying yes
• Recognizing patterns that may actually be survival responses
• Breaking generational cycles
• Rebuilding your identity after difficult seasons
• Learning to choose yourself without guilt

If you're in a season where you don't quite recognize yourself anymore—or you know something in your life needs to change but you don't know what comes next—this conversation is for you.
