Ep. 990: Continental Divide Trail by Bike - Kurt Refsnider

Ep. 990: Continental Divide Trail by Bike - Kurt Refsnider

More than 20 years ago, 7th-grade Kurt entered his first mountain bike race at the Minnesota Zoo, and he's been racing and adventuring on bikes ever since. After bouncing around the road and scenes while in graduate school, he eventually returned to the dirt and became enamored by probing mental and physical limits in multi-day ultra endurance events, winning and setting records in some of the toughest bikepacking races in the United States – Tour Divide, the Arizona Trail 300 and 750, the Colorado Trail Race, the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and more.

Today we’re honing in on Kurt’s recent completion (only the third ever) of biking the CDT. Yes, most of the CDT is bikeable (I didn’t know this), with the opportunity to take different routes through the non-bikeable wilderness segments. This trail is hard so even for a seasoned and record-breaking cyclist like Kurt, the mileage doesn’t come easy.

Rugged backcountry trails are where he loves riding the most. He rides for the Industry Nine - Pivot Pro Backcountry team, and beyond pedaling his bike, Kurt is a co-founder of and the Routes Director at Bikepacking Roots, a cycling coach, a former geology professor, and an advocate for landscapes, backcountry trails, and climate.

Ep. 385: Overlanding Fulltime with the Family Revisited - Luisa & Graeme Bell

Listen in as we revisit one of our favorite overlanding shows.  Several years ago Luisa and Graeme Bell along with their kids Keelan and Jessica set out to explore the African continent via overland vehicle. It didn't take but a few days back in the home in South Africa to realize that they needed to see more. Much more! So they put their existing lives aside, purchased a 2009 Land Rover Defender 130 and outfitted it for full-time living. The Bells then started to roam. Their travels have taken them around the African continent nearly twice and then up through South and Central America winding them through the United States and up to Alaska. We've caught up with them while they are house sitting in Baja Mexico. Listen in to hear how they do it and what experiences they've had so far! LOTB Preview - Life Outside of the Box Series - Out with the 9-5 and In with Costa Rica! - Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour

LOTB Preview - Life Outside of the Box Series - Out with the 9-5 and In with Costa Rica! - Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour

Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour found themselves bogged down in the daily 9-5 grind as many of us do. They were working long hours in Dallas having spent 20+ years in their corporate jobs earning good money only to live a life of comfort and purchasing their toys, but realized that actually had very little time together to use those toys and spent it with each other. They weren't particularly happy in their situation. Sound familiar at all? When Greg's health appeared to be taking a turn for the worse due to stress, the two decided they must find a better way. They considered other options to stay working elsewhere in the US, but decided that a major relocation and mind-shift was in order. Jen and Greg ultimately decided to retire early, sell the house as well as all of the toys and move south to Costa Rica. This was Greg's idea which did not sit very well with Jen at first, but she eventually warmed up to it and to Costa Rica they went. Listen in to hear their story and the happiness that followed their monumental decision. Ep. 381: First Woman to Kayak the Amazon from Source to Sea - Darcy Gaechter

Ep. 381: First Woman to Kayak the Amazon from Source to Sea - Darcy Gaechter

In 2013, Darcy Gaechter became the first woman (and vegan) to kayak the Amazon River from source to sea. With blistering lips and irradiated fingernails, her team of three paddlers tackled Class V whitewater for twenty-five days in a row; just barely survived a dynamite laden canyon being prepared for a hydroelectric dam, and pled for mercy at the hands of the murderous Ashaninka people who remained somewhat convinced we had come to steal their children's organs. In a desperate act meant to give me some pretense of control, Darcy cut off all of her hair just before they entered Peru’s notoriously violent “Red Zone.” The hope was to pass for a boy and be seen as less of a target. Despite all odds, they reached the Atlantic Ocean 4,300 miles and 148 days of kayaking later. Upon reaching the Atlantic, the three, an esoteric computer programmer from London, a vegan girl from Aspen, CO and her begrudging boyfriend who would become the first man to kayak the Amazon, “because his girlfriend made him”—became the first three people to kayak the entire Amazon. Darcy became the first woman to do it. Now, the same number of people have walked on the moon as have descended the Amazon from source to sea. www.kayaktheamazon.com Intagram: darcygaechter Facebook: darcygaechter Twitter: @gaechterdarcy Email: darcy_at_smallworldadventures.com Small World Adventures www.smallworldadventures.com/team/darcy-gaechter If you know a Publisher who would be interested in taking a crack at Darcy's new book Amazon Woman", please put her in touch or let us know and we'll pass the info along.
