Ep. 1023: Becoming a Better Outdoor Leader - Jeanette Stawski

Ep. 1023: Becoming a Better Outdoor Leader - Jeanette Stawski

There is no one "right way" to lead--you don’t have to be the fastest, strongest, or most experienced to be a great leader. What the best leaders possess is a deep commitment to the greater good.

Drawing on her decades of experience as a national outdoor leader, Jeannette Stawski explores the elements of transformative leadership. Using real-life examples from the outdoors and every day, she focuses on the essentials: resilience, grit, integrity, tolerance for adversity, and highly developed listening and communication skills.

Whether you spend time in city parks, on mountains, in rivers, or beyond, you know that nature is a powerful teacher. Stawski shares inspiring stories from a range of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals, including Elyse Rylander, Kenji Haroutunian, Joe Stone, Stacy Bare, Victoria Lopez-Herrera, and more, as well as key principles from the Cornell Outdoor Education program, co-directed by Karel Hilversum.

Jeannette Stawski serves as executive director for the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE). She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a Certified Executive Coach. She was the director of Outdoor Adventures at the University of Michigan for eleven years and has worked as a professional outdoor guide, a wilderness medicine instructor, and NOLS instructor. She is currently the chair of the Coalition for Outdoor Access (COA) and lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband and their two children.

Ep. 289: Long Distance Kitesurfing - Bowen Dwelle

Ep. 289: Long Distance Kitesurfing - Bowen Dwelle

Here's one we haven't covered yet. Bowen Dwelle joins the ASP to talk about Long Distance Exploratory Kitesurfing, Foil Boarding, Flow, the long distance experience, athletic journeys, the nature of (what is) adventure, athletics and intuition, and the new normal in adventure sports. Bowen's Adventure Portfolio: I am a lifelong outdoors sports enthusiast (skateboarding, snowboarding, rock climbing, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, open water swimming, trail running, MTB, kitesurfing, paragliding) and have in the last ten years become a passionate and now semi-professional kitesurfer. While most people think of kitesurfing for the freestyle (tricks) and perhaps also for wave riding, there are other disciplines that are gaining traction and progressing the sport: course racing, foil board kiting and my specialty: long distance.  We have developed techniques to allow truly long distance travel – 100+ miles in a day and 1000+ miles in a single journey -- by kite, and we have done several trips on the coast of Brazil and elsewhere using these techniques.  I was fortunate enough to be one of the principal athletes in a film production that we just finished about the long distance experience, exploring the northern coast of Brazil by kite. We shot last summer (2016) and just finished editing and it's now screening on Canal OFF in Brazil. In the meantime I was in the Philippines in March 2017 shooting another similar expedition and will be back in Brazil in September 2017 shooting an entire series of long distance exploratory kiting, from Atins to the mouth of the Amazon and up the river to Santarem!   Watch the documentary: https://vimeo.com/220552327 Read more: http://www.surfinsemfim.com Bowen's Blog: www.bowendwelle.com   The Adventure Sports Podcast is sponsored by Health IQ, an insurance company that helps health conscious people get special life insurance rates.
