This week I am talking to Karl Svozil about his his book 'UFOs: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena: Observations, Explanations and Speculations'.Unidentified phenomena in space, in the Earth's atmosphere, and in waters are too important to leave their exploration to the military and scientific laypersons. Their proper scientific study is important for a variety of reasons; in particular, scientists and the public at large need to know the basic facts, to be informed about the way evidence is recorded, and to understand the difference been reliable evidence and fiction, as well as between plausible explanations and fantasy.With this objective, the book surveys the history of UFO observations, the variety of recorded phenomena, and recounts the efforts of investigative commissions and their published findings.Although wild rumors are demystified in the process, this is not an exercise in rumor-bashing. An open and at the same time critical mindset is the key. Many narratives and hypothesis appear implausible relative to our present state of knowledge; but this alone should not lead to their outright exclusion. Thus the author also pays attention to UFO sightings that have so far eluded explanation in terms of known physics or meteorology. Here the reader will encounter some of the more speculative but scientifically tenable proposals, for example, relating to sudden zigzag motion without apparent inertia or recognizable propulsion, yet always with a clear guide to their plausibility. A UFOlogist is pretty much anyone who studies the topic and shares their research. Just like journalists, there isn’t a UFOlogy certification. On top of that, those that seek to foster the stigma are more than pleased to slather pseudoscience over the term. In that respect, I’d not consider myself any sort of ‘ologist, more of a layperson translator. I’m seeking to advance understanding. At the same time I’d like to push back against the disinformation that overwhelms the topic. As a first time non-fiction author, I’m curious to see if this guidebook will spark something. In 1973: A Time of UFO Sightings, Landings and Abductions, the history of these sightings and the importance of them is explored. It was a time of unprecedented landings with beings from inside the craft seen outside gathering samples of the local flora and fauna. But the most significanct differences were the tales of alien abduction with the best documented of those cases being that reported by Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker. Add to that, the many sightings that involved electromagnetic effects and the close encounter experienced by a National Guard helicopter crew led by Captain Lawrence Coyne the case for the extraterrestrial explanation for many UFO sightings becomes infinitely stronger. The book provides a history of UFO sightings, independent documentation for the extraordinary events, and a suggestion of what might be coming in the future.BioKevin D. This week the I am reading from Cheryl Lynn Carter's book 'Chosen'.Consciousness is described as perceptual awareness or higher-order thought.
