Ep. 1052: Thru-Hiking With a Dog - Revisited - Whitney "Allgood" LaRuffa

Originally published July 7th, 2016

While thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1996, Whitney LaRuffa found his new hiking companion, a wandering dog which he named Erwin after the town in Tennessee where they met. Erwin continued the AT hike the rest of the way through to Maine and went on to accompany Allgood for 13 years on many more hikes. Whitney joins Travis from his Continental Divide Trail thru-hike on today's show to talk about hiking with dogs and the adventures of hiking America's greatest trails.

Ep. 608: Finding Solitude While Living Above the Arctic Circle - Katherine Keith

From her book, Epic Solitude: A Story of Survival and a Quest for Meaning in the Far North“Katherine Keith is a wilderness athlete, experience junkie, spiritual questor, long-distance dog musher, and mother to a sixteen-year-old daughter, and 35 dogs, living above the Arctic Circle in Kotzebue, Alaska. Professionally, and as a jack-of-all-trades survivalist, she is a small business owner, rural Alaska project director, energy engineer, commercial fishermen, and wellness advocate. Accomplishments such as completing six Ironman triathlons and five 1000-mile dog sled races form the Cornerstone of Katherine’s philosophy of generating grit through overcoming real-time obstacles. A never-ending dreamer, Katherine is currently pursuing climbing the seven tallest summits on every continent as a budding alpinist. Above all, she loved spending time star-gazing, chasing northern lights, and playing cribbage by wood stove with Amelia at camp."Her Book: Epic Solitude: A Story of Survival and a Quest for Meaning in the Far NorthHer website: KatherineKeith.comInstagram: @katherine.keithFacebook: @kmkeithTwitter: @KatKeithAthletic Brewing Adventure Grant Application: https://athleticbrewing.com/pages/athletic-brewing-2020-adventure-grantTry CS Instant Coffee for 50% off your first order for the months of September and October only! Ep. 606: Racing the Tour Divide in Your 60's - Marty Johnson

Ep. 606: Racing the Tour Divide in Your 60's - Marty Johnson

When Marty's 60th birthday came rolling around, he knew he needed to do something adventurous that took him out of his normal routine and into an entirely different frame of mind. From that longing came the idea to race in the Tour Divide, a 2,750-mile, mostly off-road, mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico along the Continental Divide.  Now, at the age of 65, Marty is gearing up this June for another TD attempt. His 6th time on the trail.  Our most adventurous years don't have to be the earliest. In fact, they can be the most recent. I hope Marty's story helps you see your own adventure in 2020.  Instagram:  bucketride.bike Photo: Linda Guerrette Try CS Instant Coffee for 50% off your first order for the months of September and October only! Ep. 604: Chasing Fastest Known Times - Jason Hardrath

Ep. 604: Chasing Fastest Known Times - Jason Hardrath

After a serious car accident that left him with limited mobility in his leg, Jason decided he was done letting time slip by that wasn't in the pursuit of some higher goal in places he loved to be. This led him to pursue wilderness-based FKTs (Fastest Known Times). To date, Jason has 35 FKTs in some of the most iconic and beautiful places in the American West. Many of those FKTs are on impressively difficult routes. The Cascade Trifecta, Rainier Infinity Loop, Crater Lake Circumnavigation, and Oregon's Five Highest are all FKT's Jason has under his belt.  Not bad for an elementary PE teacher having this level of adventures on school breaks and weekends.  Just imagine what you can do if you started trying. Ep. 602: Ironman Champion - Ben Hoffman

Ep. 602: Ironman Champion - Ben Hoffman

At a young age, Ben and his parents pedaled all over the US on extended bike tours. He credits these early endurance events as part of the foundation that led to his ability to outlast his opponents in traditional sports. However, it wasn’t until college at the University of Montana in Missoula that Ben discovered triathlons in a book while traveling to Alaska.  Once he got back to school he signed up for the local triathlon and was instantly hooked. Ben immediately set his sights on becoming pro. Since then, Ben has won seven full Ironman races, seven 70.3 Ironman races, came in 2nd in the Ironman World Championship in 2014 and 4th in both 2016 and 2019.  BenHoffmanRacing.com Instagram: @bhoffmanracing Twitter: @bhoffmanracing Facebook: @bhoffmanracing Try CS Instant Coffee for 50% off your first order for the months of September and October only!
