#32: Rebellious PR Founder Evie Smith on public relations, coming out, & cash flow

Evie Smith Rebellious PR and I met via San Diego Comic Con and I quickly realized what a great fit she’d be as a guest! Evie has been doing PR since 2007 and started Rebellious PR in 2016. Evie had everything she should have been happy with, and she wasn’t happy. She left her job, her husband, and did a complete overhaul of the life that was no longer fitting her. We dig in to navigating life after she came out, starting Rebellious PR, level-setting with clients, business development, navigating hiring and working with friends, and so much more! Rebellious PR is a boutique public relations agency in PDX and LA amplifying stories of diverse companies. We have deep roots in the consumer tech and lifestyle spaces, and we love to work with defiant founders who make their own lanes to create revolutionary work. #31: Population geneticist Janina M. Jeff, Ph.D discusses her work, In Those Genes Podcast, & speaking at TEDxFlatbush

Janina M. Jeff, Ph.D is a Spelman alum, population geneticist, Spotify Soundoff Bootcamp winner, a self-taught coder, and expert Googler. We dig in to what a geneticist does, her job as a senior Bioinformatic scientist at Illumina, the importance of information-sharing, and giving her first TEDx talk at TEDxFlatbush. She is also the host of In Those Genes Podcast, a hip-hop inspired podcast that uses genetics to uncover the lost identities of African descended Americans through the lens of Black culture.
We discuss what exactly a population geneticist does, how she does it, the importance of information-sharing, and her emotional journey throughout her education and work. I deeply appreciate Janina's vulnerability about complex and personal issues, and am so thankful for her and to be able to share her journey. Janina recently gave a TEDx talk at TEDxFlatbush, she shares the process, what she learned, and what she forgot! Listen in as she shares her journey. #30: The "behind-the-scenes" of pressing charges against your rapist

Content warning: this episode is essentially 100% about rape and sexual assault survivors. We DO NOT discuss what actually happened, & instead focus on life after being assaulted, pressing charges against one's assailant, and healing from trauma. This is the view point of one person who has been assaulted and is not to be considered as representative of what all survivors feel. I (the host) do not claim to be an expert on trauma and I'm sure I don't use all the correct language all the time. Read the blog post mentioned in the episode from the guest here: http://bit.ly/39AzENV Terrible, Thanks for Asking "Unbroken" episode: http://bit.ly/2Fp9GiA Reading reco (not mentioned in the episode, but worth reading regarding trauma): "The Body Keeps the Score" read the summary here: http://bit.ly/35sLWEO Find & follow #BTSPodcast & join our FB Group to connect w/ other listeners & submit questions! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1720173561544455/ instagram.com/btsthepodcast twitter.com/btsthepodcast facebook.com/btsthepodcast https://www.linkedin.com/company/19055475/ To support this podcast, use my promo codes for some of my favorite services: HotelTonight - LCOOK61; SOOTHE (in-home massages) - LZLRZ; get your groceries delivered with Instacart & save with: LCOOK5142 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/btspodcast/support

#27: Tabletop director Catherine Millais on working in a technical creative field, creative briefs, & self-advocacy

Director and Creative Producer Catherine Millais & I dig in to what ideal relationships with agencies & clients look like, brief preferences, negotiating raises, navigating in male-dominated spaces, and life in a creative pursuit. Catherine Millais is a director at Chuck Studios, a creative production studio that specializes in Tabletop Content, headquartered in Amsterdam. "Tabletop direction" means that Catherine has worked on a plethora of food commercials, including McDonalds, Pomidorka, Honig, and more. We get in to what it’s like being one of few women on set in a highly technical environment, imposter syndrome, working in a creative profession, and asking for raises.
