Borderlands' Box Office Goes From Bad to Worse, Alien: Romulus Comes Out Strong, and More

On the August 19, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the biggest box office stories from this past weekend.

Listener emails: Ross W. from Ontario, California writes in: “Hey Ben, While I enjoyed you and Ryan talking about video game movies last Thursday, the one movie that I was shouting at my car speakers (not really) that you missed was Tron! I saw it in the theaters when it first came out (I’m old), and have loved it ever since. Jeff Bridges and David Warner are great in it, and those very early computer graphics still look amazing. Other than that, you guys did a great job (King of Kong is fantastic). Love the podcast, keep up the great work.

Brandon from Knoxville, TN writes: Ben and Ryan, I’m a film buyer at Regal who also oversees Indian and South Asian releases for our theatre network. Pleased to hear you acknowledge Indian films occasionally sneaking into the box office top 10 over the past handful of weeks on your July 29 episode. For the past few years, especially since the smash success of RRR in early 2022, interest from North American audiences in Indian and South Asian titles has steadily grown. Over 4 million people of South Asian descent call the United States home, and they have established a large and dedicated audience for Indian releases.

India produces more films by volume than Hollywood, with the main four languages of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi featuring in the majority of releases. The most highly anticipated movies also come to American theatres around major Indian holidays and festivals. Several titles are coming to theaters to mark India Independence Day on August 15, and multiple films could land in the domestic box office top 10. Dasara on October 12, Diwali on November 1, and Christmas should also see plenty of Indian movies at American cinemas with films featuring the most popular South Asian actors in some of 2024’s most notable releases. Looking forward to hearing more of your commentary on the Indian film industry in future podcasts!

Huge Changes Coming To DC Movies & Election Sequel

Huge Changes Coming To DC Movies & Election Sequel

On the December 9, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film editor Ben Pearson to discuss the latest film and tv news, including big shakeups at DC Movies and an Election sequel. In The News: (og Erin) Reese Witherspoon To Return For Election Sequel Tracy Flick Can’t Win At Paramount + (og Vespe): Jason Momoa Could Be Lobo And Other Big Changes Coming To The New DC UniverseGunn’s tweets Gunn and Safran supposedly want a completely fresh slate, which means a final curtain call on the Zack Snyder era of DC. The upcoming "Flashpoint" film is allegedly the last time we'll see the Zack Snyder version of your favorite heroes in cameo form Wonder Woman 3 Will Not Be Moving ForwardPatty Jenkins' Departure From Wonder Woman 3 Sounds Rather ThornyThe Wrap alleges that Wonder Woman 3 was not a direct cancelation by the studio but that director and co-writer Patty Jenkins declined to rewrite her treatment, effectively walking off the project. According to their sources, the treatment for Wonder Woman 3 was given not only to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran but Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. While all four figures believed the treatment needed edits, Gunn and Safran were apparently not involved in the final decision whatsoever — De Luca, Abdy, and Jenkins reportedly had a heated discussion about the treatment, with the latter standing firm on her vision for the character, and the trio unable to compromise,  The insider source told the trade that Jenkins "doesn't want to allow" Gunn or Safran "a seat at the table," while also claiming that Jenkins believed that De Luca and Abdy "didn't understand her" or Wonder Woman. I’m skeptical. Of course, Jenkins supposedly walked off Thor 2 and Rogue Squadron due to creative disagreements. So the film might not be canceled after all but Patty Jenkins won’t be making the movie. Henry Cavill is not likely to return for his own "Superman" movieAppearance in Black Adam, announcing Superman is back and Cavill leaving Witcher after season 3 Black Adam is not getting any sequelsweird box office stories Jason Momoa's Aquaman will have his last big screen hoorah in the upcoming sequel "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." Shocker? Momoa could star in a Lobo movieEric Vespe describes Lobo as a galactic bounty hunter who looks like Rob Zombie got melded with Arnold Schwarzenegger and the entire band KISS in full makeup and costume. He's a hardcore, kind of punk anti-hero, and Momoa is just about the most perfect actor to play that part. Thoughts on Momoa in a Lobo movie Matt Reeves  "Batman" films and the Joker sequel seem to still be in the works   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.  You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (RSS).  And please subscribe to our newsletter! Avatar: The Way of Water Early Buzz & The Future of Indiana Jones

On the December 7, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by no one to answer some Indiana Jones emails in the Mailbag and discuss the latest film and TV news, which all circles around Avatar: The Way of Water. Opening Banter: We are transferring our podcast over to a new host so if there is any wonkiness, we apologize in advance! In The Mailbag: Gert from The Netherlands writes in “When it comes to the future of the Indiana Jones franchise, deep faking Harrison Ford for a feature length movie could be done - but shouldn’t be done. That being said I doubt Ford would ‘sell’ his likeness to be used for all of eternity ;)  I always thought a series following a young group of archeological students (taught by Jones) on many adventures - could work. Throw in a few ‘legacy’ characters like Mutt or Short Round to tie everything together.  The show would simply be called: RAIDERS. It borrows from the original title of the first film and should be recognizable enough using the right font.” Robert V writes in “On Friday’s podcast you mentioned that you think that Indiana Jones might die in the new movie. Rest assured he will not die. On the show ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles’ there was a scene that featured an Indiana Jones in his 90s. Unless Disney had decided that the show isn’t canon anymore, it should still be true.” In The News: Avatar: The Way Of Water Early Buzz: James Cameron Does It Again In Visually Stunning And Emotional Return To PandoraAre you surprised?
