Kesällä 1971 katosi kolme nuorta naista jäljettömiin Helsingin lähistöllä. Kun tyttöjen ruumiit löytyivät, poliisi alkoi epäillä että kaikki kolme oli surmannut sama henkilö. Koska tytöt olivat kadonneet liftaamisen yhteydessä, poliisi epäili että uhrit olivat nousseet tappajansa auton kyytiin. Kesäkuussa 1996 Darlie Routier-niminen nainen soitti hätäkeskukseen Texasissa Yhdysvalloissa ja kertoi, että joku oli tunkeutunut hänen kotiinsa ja puukottanut hänen kahta pientä poikaansa. Myös Darlie itse oli loukkaantunut hyökkäyksessä. Nopeasti rikospaikan tutkimisen jälkeen poliisi alkoi uskoa, että mitään ulkopuolista tekijää ei oikeasti ollut olemassakaan. Pastori Matthew Winkler löydettiin ammuttuna kotoaan Selmerin kaupungista Yhdysvalloissa. Melko pian selvisi, että kyseessä oli perheen sisäisen teko ja syyllinen saatiin kiinni. Motiivi teolle jäi kuitenkin epäselväksi, sillä syyttäjällä ja puolustuksella oli hyvin erilainen näkemys siitä, mikä rikokseen oli johtanut.
