Lokakuussa 1994 Susan Smith soitti hätäkeskukseen ja kertoi, että hänelle entuudestaan tuntematon mies oli kaapannut hänen autonsa, jonka sisällä olivat myös kaksi hänen pientä lastaan. Susanin puhelusta alkoi laaja poliisitutkinta ja mediahuomio, johon kukaan ei osannut varautua. 14-vuotiasta Reena Virkia kiusattiin rankasti koulussa ulkonäön takia. Edes uuteen kouluun vaihtaminen ei auttanut, vaan kiusaaminen jatkui sielläkin uusien luokkakavereiden toimesta. Lopulta Reena onnistui löytämään itselleen porukan, johon hän tunsi kuuluvansa. Pikkuhiljaa Reenalle ja hänen perheelleen kuitenkin valkeni, että nuo ihmiset eivät todellisuudessa olleet Reenan ystäviä.
