Ep. 524: Vol-Bivouac Paragliding 1,200-Km of the Canadian Rockies - Benjamin Jordan

Ep. 524: Vol-Bivouac Paragliding 1,200-Km of the Canadian Rockies - Benjamin Jordan

Last summer, Benjamin Jordan realized his lifelong dream of flying his paraglider along the entire length of Canada's southern Rocky Mountains.

From Roosville, Montana to Prince George, BC, the 37-year old, Nelson-based filmmaker flew his wind-powered aircraft across some of BC's and Alberta's most rugged wilderness while having to make strategic landings atop mountains to avoid electrical storms or touching down within the forbidden boundaries of Banff National Park.

Despite the many challenges he encountered along the way, none compared to the psychological struggle of sitting alone in the alpine for weeks at a time, waiting for poor weather or wildfire smoke to clear so that he could fly on. Able to carry no more than 12-days of food, Jordan would occasionally land in populated areas to refuel before heading back up into the nearest summit to re-launch.

Of the entire expedition, Jordan was most nervous, and excited, about soaring over the glaciers and alpine lakes of Jasper National Park, North America's only National Park to allow Paraglider travel. Though its remoteness and mystery have caused pilots to stay away, Jordan dedicated a complete year to studying Jasper's unique topography with the ambitious dream of becoming the first person to fly across her entirety.

Despite extended waits between flights, his fortune continued for 50 consecutive days until the unprecedented levels wildfire smoke of late August left Jordan with no choice but to complete his 1200 km, un-supported journey on foot. During a 4-day (214 km) walk from McBride to Prince George, Jordan had time to reflect on his unique accomplishment while stepping into the record books for the Longest Vol-Biv (Fly-Camp) Expedition in America.

A film depicting the entire journey will be released in the Spring of this year at theendlesschain.com

Ep. 657: Bikepacking the Ecuadorian Andes - Revisited - Maggie Burke & Uriel Eisen

Originally aired September 28, 2017Uriel Eisen and Maggie Burke made their own Bikepacking bags and tent to go bikepacking in the Ecuadorian Andes. There were a lot of unknowns going in. Neither of them spoke much Spanish and neither of had done much high altitude activities. It was challenging at times with brutally rugged terrain, but the friendly people and the grandeur of the Andes made it incredibly rewarding for these two! Ep. 656: Using Adventure Sports to Change the World - Billy Starr

Ep. 656: Using Adventure Sports to Change the World - Billy Starr

When Billy’s mother, Betty, was diagnosed with cancer he decided to return home to Massachusetts instead of leaving for his climbing trip to Nepal. Billy had just graduated from college in Colorado and the world was seemingly his oyster. As his mother’s cancer worsened, those free-spirited experiences became less and less important and were ultimately replaced with grief after Betty tragically passed away from cancer in 1974. After floundering a few years and wondering how to process the grief, Billy’s desire to “do something” continued to grow. He took action in 1980 by organizing the first Pan-Mass Challenge as a way to make sense of the grief and carry on the legacy of his mother. The challenge would be to ride a bicycle across Massachusetts and raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Foundation. 36 people joined that first year and they raised $10,000. The PMC was born. As founder and executive director of the Pan-Mass Challenge for over 40 years, Billy has grown the PMC into the largest single fundraising event in the country. To date, more than $700 million dollars has been raised, 6,000 riders participate every year with 4,000 volunteers, and participation from 200 companies. Find out more at pmc.org.Donate here.Register to ride virtually here. Ep. 652: The Longest Canoe Trip Ever Done - Dana Starkell

Ep. 652: The Longest Canoe Trip Ever Done - Dana Starkell

When 10-year-old Dana bought a book about Tarzan rather than a candy bar with his first $1 allowance, he had no idea just how fateful that decision would be. After being inspired by the book he told his dad, Don, that he wanted to walk to the Amazon River. Don, being the imaginative adventurer that he was, took his son's request seriously and began planning what would become the world's longest-ever canoe trip. It would take 10 years before Don, Dana, and his brother, Jeff, would set out on their 12,000 mile, 2-year-long journey to the mouth of the Amazon River. Jeff eventually dropped out of the adventurere, but Don and Dana made it to the end, earning their induction into the Guinness Book of World Records for having completed the longest canoe journey ever, a distance of 12,181 miles (19,603 kilometres).Buy the book here: PaddletotheAmazon.comguitarsystem123.comdanastarkell.comFacebook: @PaddleToTheAmazonSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
