Ep. 568: How an Injury and Opportunity Is Leading Thousands to Learn Snowboarding Virtually - Fraser Johnston

Ep. 568: How an Injury and Opportunity Is Leading Thousands to Learn Snowboarding Virtually - Fraser Johnston

When Fraser Johnston injured himself one summer, he realized that if the same injury had happened during the snowboarding season, he’d be in a heap of trouble. As a snowboard instructor, your body’s health is crucial to earning a living since you need to be on a board with your students. He quickly began brainstorming ideas to help scale his knowledge and passion for snowboarding, just in case.

On top of that, Fraser noticed a huge lack of sign-ups in snowboarding lessons compared to skiing. The cultural stigma of snowboards and skyrocketing prices of gear and lift tickets helped fuel the idea of an economical and virtual way for him to make snowboarding more accessible to more people.

He came up with Watch and Ride, a series of virtual lessons from basic to advanced to teach every type of snowboarder new tricks, skills, and the science behind snowboarding to optimally enjoy their time on the mountain. The business has been growing steadily, as well as his skills in marketing, content-creating, and scale. If you have a love for an adventure sport and want to one day turn it into a career, give this episode a listen! You’re bound to learn something from Fraser’s story.

Ep. 754: Cycling Namibia’s Skeleton Coast - Kate Leeming

Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That’s Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. It’s a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it’s filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean. Kate is back today to tell us about cycling the length of this incredibly unique place.Enjoy!Learn more about Kate and her upcoming film(s):www.kateleeming.comwww.Breakingthecycle.educationFacebook: @kate.m.leemingInstagram: @Leeming_KateSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Ep. 752: Riding a Horse Across America - Jesse McNeil

Ep. 752: Riding a Horse Across America - Jesse McNeil

From JesseMcNeil.com:“At 37, Jesse McNeil—at times carpenter, commercial fisherman, dabbler in real estate—decided to buy an untrained horse, make himself into a horseman, and ride all the way across the United States, from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.A fiercely independent traveler, Jesse had navigated previous coast-to-coast trips—solo journeys by moped, bicycle, and small airplane. This time, however, he had a partner: a five-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse named Pepper. An inexperienced horseman with an equally inexperienced mount, Jesse would quickly discover the immense challenges of his new undertaking. Over the course of eight months and fourteen states—beginning in Oregon and ending on a beach in New Hampshire—he would be tested many times over as he learned not only what it took to keep Pepper safe and healthy, but the true value of qualities that he had once easily dismissed: patience and companionship. The generosity of strangers, from helpful ranchers and storekeepers to suburban families, shaped the pair’s journey east. And while at some points the miles didn’t unfold as Jesse hoped, others yielded unexpected events that changed his perspective—and quite possibly, his future. Written with honesty, grit, and grace, On the Hoof captures an arduous voyage that broke a man down and built him back up, with the help of one special horse.”To find out more about Jesse and his book, On the Hoof, which will be available on Aug 5th, go to onthehoofbook.com. Facebook: @onthehoofusaInstagram: @onthehoofusaSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 747: Climbing in North Korea, Nepal & Siberia - Revisited - George Kourounis

Ep. 747: Climbing in North Korea, Nepal & Siberia - Revisited - George Kourounis

Originally aired May 10, 2018One of our favorite recurring guests, George Kourounis, is back on the show today. George recently returned from Nepal where he visited Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas to film a TV show. They decided to try visiting the base camp with no acclimatization. So they took a helicopter up with no time to adjust. George immediately experienced the effects of hypoxia during this trip. George was also fortunate enough to meet Kancha Sherpa on this helicopter ride. Kancha Sherpa is the last surviving member of Sir Edmond Hillary's 1953 expedition to be the first people to reach the summit of Everest. On our last show with George, he was preparing to head to North Korea for a rare opportunity to mountain trek, climb and camp. He was approved by the government and was able to travel there in May of 2017. He fills us in on what it was like to be a western-world guest in this secretive country during tumultuous political times. His experience is an interesting one that most of us never get to hear much less experience. Listen in to hear about what the mountains and surroundings are like over there.George tells about his continued trips to volcanoes including 11,384 ft Mt Nyiragongo which is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He explains that the lake nearby, Lake Kivu,  which is susceptible to exploding due to the vast amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide at the bottom. The volcano holds the world's largest boiling lake of lava.He traveled down the Road of Bones to visit a village in the middle of Siberia, Oymyakon, which is known as the coldest place on earth. He tells us a story about visiting a preserved woolly mammoth frozen in the permafrost and when no one was looking, George snapped off a little mammoth to have a taste. Listen in to hear what that experience was like for him. Then we discussed the difficulty of ice climbing on icebergs to place satellite tracking devices on them for tracking the path of the icebergs as they float through the ocean. It's never a dull hour when our friend George Kourounis joins us on the show. www.furiousearth.comwww.cloud9tours.comwww.youtube.com/user/gkourouniswww.twitter.com/georgekourouniswww.facebook.com/explorergeorgekourouniswww.explorers.orgIs the price of gear holding you back from going on your next adventure or have extra gear you don’t need?
