Cliff Mallett - Becoming a good High Performance Coach

What is good high performance coaching and leadership like? How do you create rapport and trust with the athlete? What are the best tools and methods for becoming a better coach? These are key questions I have been wrestling in my coaching career and also researched the topic in my sport psychology masters thesis. In this episode I got a fantastic opportunity to wrestle with these questions with Professor Cliff Mallett from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, whose research has played a key role in broadening my understanding of what it means to be a "good coach". Professor Cliff Mallett is a high performance specialist with PhD in sport psychology and extensive practical coaching background. Cliff has specialised in understanding the interdependencies between people and the complexities of high performance contexts to enable successful (winning) outcomes. He has coached many athletes to Olympic, World Championships, and Commonwealth medals in track and field athletics. Furthermore, he is a world renowned practitioner and applied researcher. He is Professor in sport psychology and coaching (University of Queensland and Technical University of Munich; EW Barker Professor NIE, Singapore), and has been regularly sought after within the corporate and academic worlds for his advisory and mentorship. Steven Lockley is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Neuroscientist at the Harvard Medical School specialising in sleep and circadian disorders. Steven has written the book "A short introduction to sleep" with Russel Foster. Ville on aivotutkimuksesta väitellyt psykologi jolla on 20 vuoden kokemus työelämän parissa työskentelystä. Ville toimii myös käyttäytymistieteellisen asiantuntijaryhmän jäsenenä pääministerin kansliassa.  Hodge ja kumppanit (2014) kirjoittivat tieteellisen artikkelin Uuden-Seelannin Rugbymaajoukkueen kasvutarinasta, siitä miten ryyppäilevästä ja välinpitämättömästä joukkueesta kasvoi yksi urheilumaailman ihailluimmista yhteisöistä ja joukkueista, joka lopulta voitti maailmanmestaruuden vuonna 2011. Keskustelun pohjana käytetään tätä tarinaa jota ristiinpölytetään yritysmaailman ja Villen kokemusten kanssa.
