Ep. 805: Near Death on the Pacific Crest Trail - Alan Carpenter

Ep. 805: Near Death on the Pacific Crest Trail - Alan Carpenter

Alan didn’t start his long-distance career until the age of 62! Since discovering his love for adventures he has logged over 20,000 miles in the last decade with accomplishments like hiking the John Muir Trail (twice), the Colorado Trail (twice), the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and half of the Continental Divide Trail. He has also bicycled the US Pacific Coast, across the US on the Southern Tier, and Northern Tier Routes. All this has been in his 60’s and 70’s.

This continued love for adventure, however, came from the most unexpected of places, a near-death experience on the Pacific Crest Trail. The life-threatening accident completely changed the way he viewed the world and led him to make the healthy choices he’s incorporated into his daily life, which he attributes to his ability to do these adventures at his age.

This is a great tale full of wisdom and inspiration that I know you’ll enjoy.

Ep. 793: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail & Walking Across America…Barefoot - Ron Zaleski

Ep. 793: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail & Walking Across America…Barefoot - Ron Zaleski

Back in 1972, Marine veteran Ron Zaleski decided to take off his shoes in honor of the fallen members of his squadron from the Vietnam war. He doesn’t know exactly why not wearing shoes was his answer of how to deal with the grief and guilt but the fact remained that he never put them back on and he had never told anyone why he went barefoot. That is until one day a little boy asked him why he wasn’t wearing shoes… That boy was the first person Ron had told about why he was living barefoot in over 30 years. Ron immediately saw his dedication to ‘barfootness’ as a way to raise awareness and honor his fallen friends in a much more impactful way. Not long after, Ron set out on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and a coast-to-coast walk across the US with no shoes at all to honor and raise awareness for the many challenges veterans face when returning home. His stories are endless, captivating, and amazingly told.
