In this episode of Teachers Off Duty, Jess Smith, Leslie Rob, and Brian Moote dive into the chaos and comedy of classroom life—and how humor often becomes a teacher's greatest survival skill. From Leslie's infamous attempt to jump a fence on a field trip (in a skirt, no less), to Brian getting heckled by kindergartners into proving he could still dunk, the trio shares the hilarious, cringeworthy, and surprisingly heartfelt moments that come with trying to keep kids engaged and yourself sane. Whether it's spelling on the whiteboard with dyslexia, dodging judgmental admin in the hallway, or reading test instructions in a robot voice, these stories show the reality of teaching with levity.

But beyond the laughs, they unpack why humor actually matters. It builds trust, breaks down walls, and offers a moment of joy to students who may desperately need it, especially in high-pressure environments filled with testing, expectations, and emotional weight. Even if the jokes bomb or backfire (and they will), the act of showing up with authenticity and lightness can change the classroom dynamic completely.

If you've ever relied on a dad joke to get through the day, or taught a lesson with your fly down and your dignity on the line, this one's for you.
