Ep. 943: Using Nature to Navigate - Revisited - Tristan Gooley
Originally aired Feb 11, 2019Tristan Gooley is a New York Times-bestselling author and an avid outdoorsman. He has led expeditions on five continents, climbed mountains all over the world and is the only living person to have both flown and sailed solo across the Atlantic. After realizing he doesn’t love talking about the gear and “stuff” of expeditions and adventures, he was curious as to why adventure called him so strongly to do these trips. Was it the thrill, the experience, or something else? He eventually realized he loved the act of “finding his way” through Nature using unconventional means, Nature itself. Thus began a lifelong passion for learning how Nature tells us where we are and how to get where we’re going. In his books, you’ll learn how to “read” Nature to find your way. Things like locating north using puddles, finding your proximity to civilization using plants and using the behavior of animals to forecast the weather. Don’t tune out, because Tristan shares why these skills are important for the person who will never be lost in the outdoors.Naturalnavigator.com@NaturalNav on TwitterNew Newest Book: The Nature InstinctSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 942: Losing 200 Pounds to Hike the PCT - Part 2 - Josh “Long Story” Murphy
This is the second half of the interview I had with Josh. You can listen to the first half on last Monday’s episode, Ep. 940. Growing up poor in rural Pennsylvania as a morbidly obese child, and later adult, left Josh with very little prospects in life, by his own accounts. He was convinced he was bound for an early grave and life wouldn’t amount to much. One day a radical shift in perspective and life habits, brought on by the smallest comment from an acquaintance, let Josh to losing over 200 pounds and pursuing a life long dream of military service. Although Josh was making his way into the military, a chronic condition, due to his previous weight, kept him from advancing. However, where one dream died another was born.Following his army dreams crashing and burning he took to the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail where he hooped to find purpose, discover who he truly was and what he wanted out of life. Ep. 941: Cycling Namibia’s Skeleton Coast - Revisited - Kate Leeming
Originally aired August 9th, 2021Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That’s Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. It’s a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it’s filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean. Kate is back today to tell us about cycling the length of this incredibly unique place.Enjoy!Learn more about Kate and her upcoming film(s):www.kateleeming.comwww.Breakingthecycle.educationFacebook: @kate.m.leemingInstagram: @Leeming_KateSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here.Got an idea for a guest for the show? Ep. 939: The Sharp End of Life and Raising Alex Honnold - Revisited - Dierdre Wolownick
Originally aired April 26, 2019Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she’s made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and began climbing at 58. Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It’s evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box.
