Ep. 996: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail With Chronic Pain - Peter Conti
It was 23 months after Peter’s accident and he was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany: "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better, right?”With no real camping or outdoor experience, Peter set a starting date a mere three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.Find Peter’s Book, Only When I Step On It, below:https://www.amazon.com/Only-When-Step-Inspiring-Appalachian/dp/1737049007Also, you can support The Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Ep. 994: How a Hike Can Change Your Life - Randy Brandt
This is our first episode of the year and I wanted to highlight a story that captures everything our show is about. Randy is a longtime listener and friend of the show. His story is amazing and showcases the power of adventure in our lives. It all started with a hike.Several years ago, Randy Brandt and his then teenage son were out hiking when they ran into an older man who shared that he had just completed visiting all the National Parks. From that moment forward, Randy was inspired and made it a goal of doing more adventures and not simply waiting around for retirement to do the things he wanted to do.He has now visited over 30 National Parks and participated in countless challenges, including bikepacking the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, and the Tour Divide in a calendar year, running an ultra marathon, and riding motorcycles through the Himalayas of India! What are you going to do differently in 2024?Also, you can support The Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Ep. 992: An Accidental Life - Quinn Brett
In October 2017, climber and national park ranger, Quinn Brett, took a horrific 100-ft fall in Yosemite National park when climbing a route on the iconic El Capitan, which Quinn had already climbed before. Ep. 990: Continental Divide Trail by Bike - Kurt Refsnider
More than 20 years ago, 7th-grade Kurt entered his first mountain bike race at the Minnesota Zoo, and he's been racing and adventuring on bikes ever since. After bouncing around the road and scenes while in graduate school, he eventually returned to the dirt and became enamored by probing mental and physical limits in multi-day ultra endurance events, winning and setting records in some of the toughest bikepacking races in the United States – Tour Divide, the Arizona Trail 300 and 750, the Colorado Trail Race, the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and more. Today we’re honing in on Kurt’s recent completion (only the third ever) of biking the CDT. Yes, most of the CDT is bikeable (I didn’t know this), with the opportunity to take different routes through the non-bikeable wilderness segments. This trail is hard so even for a seasoned and record-breaking cyclist like Kurt, the mileage doesn’t come easy. Rugged backcountry trails are where he loves riding the most. He rides for the Industry Nine - Pivot Pro Backcountry team, and beyond pedaling his bike, Kurt is a co-founder of and the Routes Director at Bikepacking Roots, a cycling coach, a former geology professor, and an advocate for landscapes, backcountry trails, and climate.IG: https://www.instagram.com/kurt.refsnider/Coaching website: https://www.ultramtb.net/Team website: https://backcountry-mtb.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
