(shocked by spoiler moment in IT) Knowing that in advance wouldn't have ruined the movie, but it would have changed how I felt while watching it. Yes that was just a moment but how many moments does it take for a good movie to turn great?      Logan in Seattle writes in: “I used to think less was more, not ignoring trailers completely, but not watching more than one for a film. Now I see what you mean by enjoying the lead up as part of the journey to the film, instead of as a separate experience. I'm not a STAR WARS super fan, but I love the buzz of this industry of film so much that I can't help but be sucked into the vortex surrounding something as massive as this. So last night I watched the trailer multiple times and listened to your emergency coverage of it. Now I understand. YES! YES!"  (Guess what he's going to be for Halloween this year?)   The "twist" that Arnold was a good guy was thrilling for them, and they loved it.  Great experience for them. The funny thing is, I was 16 when T2 came out, is that this wasn't ever a "twist".  Everybody knew when they saw T2 that Arnold was the good guy.  I don't think a single person in 1991 walked into the theater without knowing that.  Cameron does structure it so that it could be a surprise.  He doesn't give it away, although if you really think about the biker bar scene it's pretty obvious.  But knowing the twist didn't diminish the enjoyment or love of the movie.  It's always been one of my favorite action movies of all time. But in terms of your conversation about coming into the movie "pure", this is an example of some real benefit and joy that came from that.  Knowing the twist (that wasn't really a twist) didn't ruin the movie for anyone, but man did it add to the experience for them.   Can you think of any other "twists" that everybody knew about going in, where the movie could of benefited from viewers coming in blind?”   Peter’s Picks: Castaway, Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genysis, (Passengers on the other hand?), 10 Cloverfield Lane? However, given that you cover film news, spoilers come with the territory of the job so I do understand how you might have developed into that position.  I feel that there were 2 topics discussed and should be treated separately from each other.  1: The film is no good if you know key elements of it going in.  I agree with both you and HT that the quality of the film doesn't change. A well crafted film is what it is. Spoilers do not change that.   However...  Keeping a lid on spoilers is about preserving the experience, which lead to:   2: Knowing a death or twist is coming doesn't matter. Disagree with this completely. Knowing major elements going into a film changes how you view the movie. The context changes. Watching The Sixth Sense a second time after you know the twist, is a totally different experience. Rather than watching things unfold, you're instead watching for clues/interactions as to how the twist works or is justified. Circling back to preserving the experience...  Magic. I know you are a huge fan of magic and practice it.  How would you feel if the veil of secrecy around every single magic trick that exists was lifted?  Would it still be magic if the whole audience knew what was coming or how it was done? Sure, if done well, it's still a great trick as with a great film.
