On the March 14, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film news writer Ryan Scott to talk about the latest film and tv news, including Shazam 2, the Bob Chapek fiasco, Deadpool 3, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer. Opening Banter: Peter is back! I have been to the Galactic Starcruiser, more on that next week!   In The News: Ryan: Shazam 2 Will Now Open Against Avatar 2, And That Is A Very Bad IdeaIs it a bad or brilliant idea? Peter: The Bob Chapek Fiasco:On February 25, the Florida House of Representatives passed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would ban lessons about sexual orientation. Critics of the bill have claimed that it is created to stigmatize marginalized students and lead to bullying and attacks. People like President Biden and former Disney head Bob Iger came out against the bill publicly.  Eyes were on Disney, as the company has such a large foothold in Florida Disney has been taking heat for declining to release a statement about the bill and for donating money (about $200,000) to statewide elected officials who supported the bill.  Chapek told castmemebers that he didn't release a statement on the bill because "they are often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame."  “I want to be crystal clear: I and the entire leadership team unequivocally stand in support of our LGBTQ+ employees, their families, and their communities. And, we are committed to creating a more inclusive company — and world,” Chapek wrote in a memo to staff. “We all share the same goal of a more tolerant, respectful world. Where we may differ is in the tactics to get there. And because this struggle is much bigger than any one bill in any one state, I believe the best way for our company to bring about lasting change is through the inspiring content we produce, the welcoming culture we create, and the diverse community organizations we support.” Rafael: Disney Censors 'Overtly Gay Affection' In Movies, According To Pixar EmployeesA public letter from “the LGBTQIA+ employees of Pixar, and their allies" went viral. "We at Pixar have personally witnessed beautiful stories, full of diverse characters, come back from Disney corporate reviews shaved down to crumbs of what they once were," the letter says. "Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney's behest, regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar." Witney: Disney CEO Bob Chapek Gives Weak Apology To Employees For His Silence On Florida Anti-Gay BillLate last week, Bob Chapek issued a public apology to the LGBTQIA+ employees working for Disney, and announced a halt to any and all political donations the company would make in the state of Florida.    Not going to read his whole statement but I think its fair to say this is being seen as too late and too little. What does Chapek need to do here?  Ryan: Deadpool 3 Finds Its Director In Free Guy Helmer Shawn LevyIs Shawn Levy a good fit? Reaction: Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer: This Is The Ewan McGregor-Led Star Wars Show You're Looking ForRyan: Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Breakdown: Ewan McGregor Finally Returns To Star Wars Joshua: Will Obi-Wan Kenobi Get A Second Season? Daily Podcast: Marvel Netflix Shows, Variable Movie Pricing, and More

On the March 3, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by no one to talk about the latest film and TV news, including the Netflix Marvel shows coming to Disney+, variable movie pricing, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki comments, Ariana DeBose in Kraven the Hunter, and more. [embed=] Opening Banter:    In The News: The Marvel Netflix Series Are Coming To Disney+ In March, Along With New Parental ControlsDefenders Assemble? Here's What The Marvel-Netflix Shows Joining Disney+ Could Mean For The MCU Here's Why You'll Pay More To See The Batman In Some TheatersSteven Spielberg And George Lucas Predicted Variable Movie Ticket Prices In 2013 One Of The Batman Spin-Off Series Will Connect To Arkham Asylum Tom Hiddleston Says He's Merely 'A Temporary Torchbearer' Of The Loki Role Kraven The Hunter: West Side Story Actress Ariana DeBose Dances Her Way Into Sony's Spider-Man Universe   West Side Story email   Dear fellow listeners,   I hope everyone gets the chance to watch Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, streaming today on Disney and HBO Max.   I grew up in Stephen Sondheim’s town, revering his lyrics and scores from a young age. I sat a row behind Steven Spielberg at Hamilton on Broadway as he was scouting future talent. I’ll never forget Leonard Bernstein’s score for On The Town booming through the Lyric Theatre.   Watching this adaptation be filmed in the summer of 2019 over social media made me so proud of all of the hard-working Broadway dancers like Jess LeProtto, Yurel Echezaretta, Kyle Coffman, Ricky Ubeda, Paloma Garcia-Lee, Eloise Kropp and more. They’ve known this Jerome Robbins choreography for years, and I was so overjoyed to see them re-interpret it on celluloid under the new choreography by Justin Peck.    This movie is made with reverence for musical theatre and movie musicals before it. Tony Winner David Alvarez and Tony Nominee/Oscar Nominee Ariana DeBose bring so much star power to the screen that make me so proud of all these Broadway professionals who made this gorgeous tapestry.   Paul Tazewell’s technicolor costume designs, with petticoats of spandex and LaDuca dance shoes, stretch and flow with every swish of these dancers’ character choices. Even the diegetic “Somewhere” musical notes in the subway scene and the Gwen Verdon-looking character in the jail are carefully-placed.   I wish everyone the joy and explosion of color and emotions of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.  -- Best, Andrew Also mentioned:      All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.  You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (RSS).  Send your feedback, questions, comments and concerns to us at peter@slashfilm.com.
