Wonder Woman, Fox Acquisition, Ant-Man, Star Wars, Twin Peaks, Doctor Sleep, Indiana Jones & MoviePass

On the June 14, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film weekend editor Brad Oman and senior writer Ben Pearson to talk about the latest news, including Comcast’s bid for 20th Century Fox, MoviePass, Ant-Man and The Wasp’s box office tracking, Star Wars Detours, Twin Peaks season 4, Doctor Sleep casting and a Raiders of the Lost Ark mystery. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). In The Mail Bag: Brayden G from Mineral Wells, Texas writes in: “With the release of the Wonder Woman 1984 photos today it had me thinking of something. I know there’s tons of theories of how Steve Trevor might be there alive and or a ghost. Mine isn’t really a theory but what if they treated him being back like Diana in the first film. Diana was filled with this sense of wonder and amazement to the world and had Trevor there to guide her through and help her adjust to the world. What if they flipped it in 1984 where Trevor is the one that’s shocked and amazed that he’s this far in the future and he needs Diana’s help. She has been alive this whole time as we know so seeing her take lead and adjust him to the times could be a pretty cool flip on the first film and a little throwback.” In the News: Comcast Officially Puts in $65 Billion Bid for 21st Century Fox, Topping Disney’s Current Bid MoviePass Has Reached 3 Million Subscribers, Still Expects to Hit 5 Million Before 2019 A MoviePass Family Plan is on the Way ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Box Office Tracking Predicts a $75 Million Opening Weekend Don’t Rule Out ‘Twin Peaks’ Season 4 Just Yet Could the Abandoned ‘Star Wars Detours’ Animated Series Finally Be Getting Released? Box Office: Godzilla x Kong, Dune: Part Two, and a Listener Recommendation

On the April 1, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office expert Ryan Scott to talk about the box office numbers from this past weekend. In The News:Godzilla X Kong Stomps Ghostbusters And Scores $75 Million Opening Weekend At The Box Office5 Reasons Godzilla X Kong Obliterated The Box OfficeGodzilla X Kong Pushes The MonsterVerse Past $2 Billion At The Box OfficeDune: Part Two Crossed Yet Another Major Box Office MilestoneMadame Web Is Hilariously Short Of A Box Office Milestone, Adding Insult To InjuryClear rundown of the box office top 10Look ahead to The First Omen and Monkey ManListener email: Hey Ben! I was listening to you and Ryan on the podcast talking about disc media rot and just wanted to share with the class that there is a good computer program for taking a DVD or Blu-Ray and creating a copy of the contents on your computer. You can transfer all the properties of the movie, including subtitles, etc. The application is called HandBrake. Computer files are infinitely duplicatable, so you could put as many copies of the same movie on as many hard drives as your heart desires.Obviously, this program could be abused and used for pirating movies (don’t use it for that!), but as long as you are only creating digital copies of movies that you bought and paid for and only for personal use, everything is kosher. On the March 25, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the latest box office numbers from the weekend and dive into the mailbag. In The News: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Mirrors Afterlife With $45 Million Opening WeekendGhostbusters: Frozen Empire Proves The Franchise Has Limited Box Office PotentialHow might Ghostbusters fare with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire coming up?Dune: Part TwoImmaculate And Late Night With The Devil Both Set Indie Horror Records At The Box OfficeE-mail: Phil from Germany wrote in a couple of weeks ago, and mentioned something in his email that I wanted to highlight here. He says: “The podcast keeps mentioning physical media and its recent bigger relevance than expected. Keep in mind that both DVDs and Blu-rays decay over time. Many of my untouched or barely touched DVDs from 20 years ago do not play completely anymore. My “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (still sealed) and “Veronica Mars” (played once before) collections only played half the episodes when I revisited these TV shows last year, and those were not the only ones. Blu-rays decay slower than DVDs, so going for those and creating backups seems to be the best way to keep the favorites available. All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com.
