Horror Movies That Traumatized Us, “So Bad They’re Good” Movies, MoviePass, The Nun, and Mailbag Questions Galore

On the August 14, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film senior writer Ben Pearson is joined by managing editor Jacob Hall, weekend editor Brad Oman, and writer Chris Evangelista to discuss the latest film and TV news, including MoviePass’s latest screw-up and a YouTube ad for The Nun. We’ll also dive into the mailbag to answer some listener questions. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: In The News: Brad - MoviePass Resubscribing Customers Who Canceled Their Subscription, Preventing Cancellation Again [Updated] Ben - Is This YouTube Ad for ‘The Nun’ Smart Marketing, Irresponsible, or Both? In The Mailbag: Paul T. from Horsham, England: Recently had a chance to see Incredibles 2 and agreed with Peter that he found it a bit lacking in some areas. He thought it was fun but “was missing a lot of the wit, charm, and emotion I would normally associate with a Pixar movie.” My second point is in relation to the proposed Kraven The Hunter movie. You guys were reflecting on if anyone thought he was a good character to bring to the screen or if there is even a story worth telling. Well I can tell you that he is a beloved villain for spider-man fans and that there is a lot of potential if they decided to adapt the "Kraven's Last Hunt" story arc. The only caveat i'd put in place for that is IT ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE SPIDER-MAN IN IT! I really hope Sony learns that the only thing that makes these villains of any interest is their interaction with Spidey and their overlapping stories. I could be wrong but so far Venom looks like hot garbage (or should that be hot turd?). Marvel/Disney please save us. Nicholas E. from Chicago, Illinois: Hey guys, I was just wondering if you guys had any horror films that traumatize you or really affected you as a child. For me, it was Chuckie. Michael O. from Nashville, Tennessee: I’m curious how you classify what year a movie falls in. I enjoyed your “Best of 2018” podcast but as I was looking some of the films up, it seems like IMDB and Letterboxd classify some of them as 2017 or even 2016 movies. Usually I would just add these movies to my personal 2018 rankings, but I always want to put an asterisk by these films. Help destroy my OCD! Leanne R from L.A.: Just wanted to shout out to HP Hogwarts Mystery! Like HT, I use the game as an excuse to take micro-breaks at work and it really helps pass the time. I’m a completionist at heart when it comes to video games so I’m in this for the long haul; thankfully they do have mini side quests in the game, one of my personal favorites being the dueling club and the addition of pets. Just wanted to add that there is also still a big fan base for the game (I recently joined the subreddit for this and it’s got a good number of people) and I’m happy that I’m still a part of it. Conor B.: Jacob went off on twitter over the weekend on MST3K/movie commentary that pokes fun of movies as being a low form of art/harmful etc...I feel as though he has mentioned other films as "so bad it's good" schlock and such, so I'm confused as to how he can say that without being a total hypocrite. Would love for the whole crew to weigh in on their thoughts and if they find things such as MST3K enjoyable or not. A lot of these films received a second lease on life due to MST3K rediscovering them - best worst movie is a great example of this as well. Love the site and the podcast, vehemently disagree with Jacob on this however! Favorite “so bad it’s good” movies? Spider-Man: Far From Home Mailbag, HBO Max, Look Who’s Talking, Lion King, Spider-Man 3 & More

On the July 10, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Scirettais joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Halland writer Chris Evangelistato talk about the latest film and tv news, including HBO Max, Lord of the Rings, Look Who’s Talking, The Lion King, Spider-Man 3, and more. And in the Mailbag we’ll be answering some questions in response to our Spider-Man: Far From Home spoiler discussion episode.   In The News: Chris: Warner Streaming Service Named HBO Max, Launching Spring 2020 (and Bringing ‘Friends’ With It) Jacob: 'Lord of the Rings' MMO Video Game Coming From Amazon Chris: ‘Look Who’s Talking’ Reboot In the Works For Some Reason Peter: ‘The Lion King’ Early Buzz: Does Jon Favreau’s Remake Roar? Jacob: If ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Doesn’t Make a Billion Dollars, Sony Breaks Free of the Marvel Studios Deal SPOILER WARNING Chris (og Brad): Kevin Feige Says the Next Spider-Man Story Has “Never Been Done Before on Film”   In The Mailbag: John O. from NJ  (Home of Six Flags Great Adventure, one of the most underrated theme parks in America) writes in “Does anyone else have a problem watching Euphoria right after Spider-Man Far from Home? I love MJ’s character just as much as Peter (Parker) does and don’t want to ruin it…” Paul Jolly from Melbourne, Australia writes in “Love your podcast. Enjoyed your spoilerific discussion of Far from home. I couldn’t help noting that when you were guessing potential names for the next Spider-Man movie, surely Homespun should be to good to miss. Beautiful punning.   Cheers.” Brian from Austin writes in “I feel like Peter Parker’s arc tracks pretty well throughout the films. Teenagers certainly are impulsive and may not know what they want in the future but Peter is more a victim of other people influencing him than anything else. That and the fact that he is compelled to help people, even when it means getting in over his head.    Civil War: Wants to protect his neighborhood, Tony asks him to step up and he does.    Homecoming: Peter has had a taste of being an avenger and thinks that’s what he wants but then realizes he’s not ready/has other priorities.    Infinity War: Has no choice but to join the fight because the threat is so large. His mentor and his city are being attacked.    Far From Home: Still wants to be a neighborhood spider-man, tries to leave it behind on his vacation but has to step up again when “Fury” recruits him and Tony gives him Edith.  Love the pod and the site!” Jon A writes in “I think you guys might be missing the real reason behind the second post credit scene, I think it’s a set-up for SWORD.” James writes in “Hi Peter,  With Spiderman Far From Home being SO intertwined with the MCU, the big question for me that came to mind was - WILL Spiderman Far From Home be on Disney+.  hypothetically, could you watch all films from the MCU on the upcoming 'Marvel' channel portion of the platform since it's distributed by SONY?”      All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.  You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotifyand all the popular podcast apps (RSS).  Send your feedback, questions, comments and concerns to us at peter@slashfilm.com.
