Mailbag: Producer/Executive Producer Differences, Review Writing Process, Film Adaptations, Halloween Plans, Translated Interviews & More

On the October 19 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to answer reader e-mail in the Mail Bag. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: HT talks about doing an interview with a translator. In The Mailbag: Chris from Ohio writes in: What are your plans for Halloween?” Britton from Louisville KY writes in: “What is the difference between a producer and an executive producer? Do they both get best picture oscars if their movie wins?” An Executive Producer is the top executive of the operations, whereas the producer is the manager of the operations. The executive producer prepares the budget and acquires the investors, while the producer makes sure how the budget is properly utilized. The producer hires the people with the right talents and skills for the movie where the producer himself is hired by the Executive Producer. For the most part, the executive producer has very little to do with the hiring process, aside from hiring the producer. The producer is on set for the entire production (although some films have multiple producers, technical producers and a creative producers), the executive producer is not on set all the time but is used in more of an advisory capacity, overseeing the scripts and marketing. A producer is always eligible for awards in the industry, on the other hand, the Executive producer is not eligible for awards. Sometimes an executive producer is more of a credit than a job. Peter explains: Damon P. from St. Louis, MO writes in “I was wondering, since many of the team reads books that are movies or will eventually be movies, if they believe that breaking up a film into two parts (think Deathly Hallows, or Mockingjay) to make a book more complete in film format is a good thing. So many times we hear “The book is better” why is that? Is that because the movies are limited by time, to incorporate additional plots points or anything like that. Would it be better to break a movie into two (or three) parts in order to give the source material it’s due?” Leanne R. from LA writes in “Here’s a quick mailbag question that occurred to me as I was listening to the 12/21 episode: what are the best films directed by & starring the same person? (or to widen the field, including the director as a minor role? e.g., Tarantino or Mel Gibson films)”Peter: Well first of all I think we should discount cameos (M Night, Tarantino...etc). Ben Affleck (Town, Argo) although I feel when hes not in the movie his films are better (Gone Baby Gone) HT: Citizen Kane, Life is Beautiful Chris: Unforgiven, A Star Is Born, Dick Tracy, Do The Right Thing Jacob: Citizen Kane, Unforgiven, lots of Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin movies Ben: The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, A Quiet Place, Rocky sequels Drew from Houston, TX writes in “Hey /Film Daily team, I really enjoyed the conversation about becoming a film writer. I had another question taking that one step further for those on the site who write reviews: what is your process? Obviously it's hard to take notes when watching a film in theaters. Do you create an outline before diving into a review? Does Chris take notes when reviewing tv shows or blu-rays before writing his review? Just curious to hear a little more about the process. Thanks!” All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. In The Spoiler Room: The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 5 “The Return of The Mandalorian” FeedbackDean points out that There might not have been a bantha death in that last episode but there was a bantha skeleton    Tim writes in “did it seem to you that the way Boba got revenge on the biker gang (killing them all while they were virtually defenseless) added some gray to his morality and took a step back from the notion that he’s now just a “good guy?””   Tyler from Seattle writes in: Why did Boba think that his armor was in the sarlacc pit when he knows that he climbed out of the pit wearing it. In fact it help him escape the pit in the first place. Unless he thinks the armor came off him and back into the pit? I know that he doesn’t know that the Jawas took it but it makes no sense why he would think it was in the pit. Do We Really Need a Movie Studio in Space? A Christmas Story Sequel & New Star Wars Video Games

Do We Really Need a Movie Studio in Space? A Christmas Story Sequel & New Star Wars Video Games

On the January 25, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film news writer Ryan Scott to discuss the latest film and tv news, including new Star Wars video games, a film studio in space, A Christmas Story sequel and Star Wars nerdiness.  In The News: Ryan: Three New Star Wars Games Announced, Including Jedi: Fallen Order SequelWhat are these games? Who’s involved? Peter (og Jeremy): A New Film Studio Is Being Built In Actual SpaceSpace Entertainment Enterprise, the UK company co-producing that ambitious Tom Cruise movie scheduled to head to space and film on the International Space Station (ISS), has announced their plans for a brand-new, wholly unprecedented film and television studio that will operate in lower Earth orbit. Called SEE-1, this orbital studio would somehow be able to host film productions, television, music, and even sporting events(!), all while doubling as the one-stop shop for "the development, production, recording, broadcasting and live-streaming of content" ... in spaaaaace! [they] are planning to accomplish this feat by attaching their production module to the Axiom Station, a proposed space station that will essentially be the private sector's spin on the International Space Station. In fact, the new space station will actually be built as an extension of the ISS before splitting off and functioning as its own orbital platform … these grand plans won't come to fruition until December of 2024, at the earliest.  What kind of movies really need to shoot in space? Ryan (og Sandy): A Creative Disagreement Saved A Major Star Wars Planet From DestructionAccording to a since-deleted tweet posted by Lucasfilm executive Pablo Hidalgo, "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams had intended for the First Order to destroy Coruscant in the film, but he was overruled and came up with the idea of Hosnian Prime being targeted by Starkiller Base instead. "Basically [J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot] wanted it blown up; [Lucasfilm Ltd.] didn't. Hosnian Prime was the unsatisfying middle ground. It happens," Hidalgo explained, later adding, "(I should say 'some folks at' because it's not like companies have points of view)."  He later clarified that it was because the planet was needed in other projects in development. What could those be? Peter (og Jenna): A Christmas Story Is Getting A Sequel With Peter Billingsley Returning As RalphieThis film will be called "A Christmas Story Christmas, Peter Billingsley will return to play Ralphie and produce.  Directed by Clay Kaytis ("The Christmas Chronicles," "The Angry Birds Movie") Script by Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino," "The Mule"). An adult Ralphie heads back to the house he shared with his family on Cleveland Street, "to deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up,” whil allowing him to "reconnect with childhood friends, reconcile the passing of his Old Man," and will include "callbacks to the initial film."  The original film was based on Jean Shepherd's book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash."  He narrated the film as the adult Ralphie. Sadly, he passed away in 1999. There have been a couple sequels already:1994: "My Summer Story," which takes place in the summer after the events of "A Christmas Story," and was directed by Bob Clark. Jean Shepherd narrated that one, as well, with Charles Grodin playing the Old Man, Mary Steenburgen playing Mrs. Parker, and Kieran Culkin as Ralphie. 2012: “A Christmas Story 2”: billed as an "official sequel”.. Directed by Brian Levant (Beethoven, The Flintstones, Jingle All The Way) and Daniel Stern plays the old man. Ralphie is now fifteen years old, and all he wants is a used 1939 Mercury Eight convertible for Christmas. Love for A Christmas Story? Can a sequel be good without Jean Shephard?    Also mentioned:      All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show n Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
