And in another edition of Advice Corner with Chris, we will find out if an aspiring filmmaker needs to move to Hollywood to pursue his dreams. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). In The News: Ben: Unmade Stanley Kubrick Script ‘Burning Secret’ is Going Up For Auction Jacob: Exclusive: Jeremy Irons is Older Ozymandias in the ‘Watchmen’ TV Series, Jean Smart Joins the Cast as an FBI Agent Chris: ‘Jonny Quest’ Movie Recruits ‘LEGO Batman Movie’ Director Chris McKay Ben: Industrial Light & Magic Launches ILM TV, Which Will Handle Visual Effects For ‘The Mandalorian’ Jacob: ‘Pacific Rim’ Anime is Coming to Netflix to Cancel the Apocalypse In Advice Corner with Chris Evangelista: Response to the last edition:Gabe from Richmond Va writes in: This question of when to show kids certain movies jarred a memory loose. My mother took my brother and I to see Ghost when I was 9 and he was 7. Yes, Ghost the Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg vehicle. At this point I had seen all the star wars movies, Indiana Jones, gremlins, etc. Ghost scared the shit out of me because of the frank display of death. It just terrified me. For what seemed like a month I tried to sleep with the lights on because the deaths in the movie haunted me. Eventually I got over it, but damn it broke my 9 year old brain for a few months. Thanks for the segment!” Kevin H writes in “Good advice on the show. The part you missed is that no matter what you show the child, be ready to answer any questions. Sometimes it can be a great to teach a lesson even if your just an uncle that they see once a week. For example the movie Eighth Grade. Even though its rated R it's a great tool to educate kids. “ Nicholas E from Chicago Heights, IL writes in “Hey, I wanted to get your thoughts on something that’s been weighing on my mind for the past year. To give some back story, I’m an aspiring filmmaker, probably like a good portion of your listeners. I spend a lot of free time writing/outlining full length scripts that I feel strongly about. Within the past few years I’ve co-written and co-directed a short film with a great team of actors and crew, and I directed a documentary I made for a loved one. Since then, my main collaborator h as made the move out West to pursue his passion in filmmaking by going to school. And I guess my question is, with all of the risks that come from moving across the country, finding a new job, finding a place to live, etc. do you think it’s something worth doing? Or do you think I should stay home, focus on my writing, and try to find a group out here in Illinois to work on a full length film with? I’m not completely sold on film school, but I’m not opposed to it. My main concern is being able to the cost of living while while trying to peruse very costly goals. I hope my question made sense, but I think this Advice Corner is pretty cool and entertaining. Much love - The Advice Corner theme song was created by Love you Wally. What We Watched Over The Holidays And Our Favorite Christmas Gifts

What We Watched Over The Holidays And Our Favorite Christmas Gifts

On the December 28, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson, weekend editor Brad Oman and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about what they did over the Holidays and share their favorite Christmas gifts.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   Feedback: Hayden writes in that “Yes Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If you break the plot down, it’s the typical Christmas story. A distant father who has to go on an adventure to rekindle his relationship with his family. Think about all the Christmas movies that have this exact plot device. Also it’s important that it’s on Christmas Eve because police activity would be down. If It’s A Wonderful Life counts, which it should, then Die Hard should. A very massive chunk of the film doesn’t even take place on Christmas.“    Leanne R. from LA writes in that “Rankin-Bass Christmas specials would have been a good addition to your lists, especially when you consider A Charlie Brown Christmas and Mickey’s Christmas Carol were mentioned in the episode (both technically films, but are popularized as tv specials). And I wasn’t sure if I missed this or not, but The Santa Clause is a quintessential Christmas movie for me.  I also wanted to give a shout out to Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle & You’ve Got Mail as well, which are not technically Christmas films but strike the proper feel-good Christmas tone to pass. You’ve Got Mail, especially, feels more Christmas-y (based on The Shop Around the Corner, it feels more deserved of a Christmas film title) and for a rom-com fan like me is also a yearly Christmas film staple.  Otherwise, very much enjoyed your lists! Thanks for the update and keep up the good work.”   Have any geeky thoughts on this news that we might not have addressed on the podcast? Send your opinions, speculation, analysis and suggestions to peter@slashfilm.com.   What we’ve been doing over the Holidays: Jacob finished Ultimate Beastmaster and American Vandal, finally got around to The Shape of Water, played more Wolfenstein 2, played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 and Pitchcard. Peter binge-watched two whole seasons of Survivor, watched the Star Wars episode of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix, and played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 board game. HT watched Ultimate Beastmaster, A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Inheritance, gave in and listened to the Hamilton soundtrack even though she was trying to save it until she saw the show. Chris saw THE LAST JEDI again on Christmas Day (it’s still good). I’ve also been reading and making an effort to not look at my phone, which is just bliss. Ben watched The Last Jedi (again), It’s a Wonderful Life, Logan Lucky, Mudbound, A Ghost Story, and The Good Place Brad saw The Disaster Artist and Molly’s Game, is continuing to catch up on awards season movies like The Post, The Florida Project, and I, Tonya, and is finally spending time playing Star Wars Battlefront 2.   Favorite gifts we got for Christmas: Peter got a Hot Toys life-size Baby Groot replica and Google Wifi router HT got KOREAN SKIN CARE, also the Costco MoviePass/Fandor year-long subscription Chris iphone X Ben got a bunch of board games Jacob got lots of new PC stuff Brad got the Ectomobile Owner’s Manual Book and his life back.   You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. Last Jedi Backlash, Trailer Reactions, Video Stores, Narcos, Man of Steel 2 & More

On the December 19, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to discuss the latest news, including: the Alamo Drafhouse launching a video store, Narcos gets new lead actors, Man of Steel sequel details, Star Wars: The Last Jedi backlash, Paramount sets new release dates and how All The Money In The World erased Kevin Spacey. And we’ll give reactions to the new trailers for Mortal Engines, Greatest Showman, Ocean’s 8, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   Feedback: Shane D writes in:   Dear /FilmDaily Crew,  I love the show!  Recently on a /FilmDaily episode, you were all discussing Redbox rental stats.  The crew, HT in particular, was very disappointed in what seemed like America's "basic" choices.   As an avid listener and Redbox user, I'd argue that these numbers are totally misrepresenting Amercia's film prowess as a whole.  My wife and I, for instance, will quickly (maybe frantically) check out the first few screens of Redbox on a busy weeknight trip to the supermarket and will frequently grab a dumb comedy or flashy action block buster.  That doesn't mean, however, that we're not also itching to watch The Big Sick or hoping to finally finish The Killing of a Sacred Deer.  It's simply a matter of a small selection that's aimed to simply entertain.  I'd compare it to the Supermarket magazine impulse section in the check out line.  Again, my wife might grab a Cosmo or even a Reader's Digest if funny enough, but she also has her Atlantic and The New Yorker subscription issues waiting for her at home.    I think we seek out those great, artsy, interesting movies on other platforms, other venues.  When we browse Redbox, we're asking for flash or fluff...we're in the mood for basic.  I think that it's part of what makes America charming, we're very basic and very interesting; very dumb and very smart, very blockbuster and very indy, all at the same time. Just my thoughts, love the show.   Have any geeky thoughts on this news that we might not have addressed on the podcast? Send your opinions, speculation, analysis, and suggestions to peter@slashfilm.com.   In the News: The Alamo Drafthouse is Opening a Video Rental Store Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Season 4 Finds New Leads in Diego Luna and Michael Peña Mark Millar Discusses the ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel That Never Was The ‘Last Jedi’ Backlash is Another Example of Fandom Gone Wrong ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Backlash Gets a Response from Director Rian Johnson Paramount Sets Dates For New ‘G.I.
