The End of Physical Media, The Best Visual Cinema Experience, Star Wars, Aquaman, Rocky III & Great Gatsby

On the November 20, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest film and tv news, including Star Wars, Aquaman, Rocky III and Great Gatsby. And in the mail bag we’ll talk about your television show recommendations and answer questions about physical media and movie theater presentation. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: Staff are traveling, hopefully, we’ll have a water cooler tomorrow. In The News: Chris: Mark Hamill Pitched George Lucas The Idea To Have Boba Fett Revealed As Luke Skywalker’s Mother HT: Most of ‘Aquaman’ Will Be Presented in Full Screen IMAX Chris: The Original ‘Rocky III’ Idea Involved Rocky Hanging Out with the Pope HT: ‘Gatz’: A ‘Great Gatsby’ Origin Series Featuring a Young, Hot, Mixed-Race Gatsby is Coming to YouTube Premium In The Mailbag: Yesterday we were talking about YouTube’s ad-supported movies. Don H writes in “Did you now VUDU has been doing this for quite some time now? I’m not sure how long, but I found old marketing e-mails from them going back to March 2017 offering free TV shows with ads. They have over a 1000 movies and TV shows to choose from and they change up the selection monthly.” Peter asked for TV show recommendations, here are some of the responses: Banshee is my first suggestion. I would argue it's the greatest action television show ever made. The fight scenes throughout this show get progressively more insane and unbelievable in all the best ways. The only thing I'll say is you just need to get over the initial premise, and if you can do that you will have so much fun with this show, and the final season (not only was chosen to end by the creator instead of being cancelled) brings everything home in truly the best way it all can. Rectify is another option if you're open to a bit of a slow burn that will literally make you cry every episode, and not for the reasons that Parenthood or This is Us do. The dialogue and the uniqueness of the main character makes this show very much worth the time to invest. Man Seeking Woman. Hilarious and unique sketch type show that also is able to tied together a coherent story from season to season and again I feel the way they choose to end the show is just perfect Those are my top 3, at least of current shows. Hope you check em out and can't wait to hear you talk about how awesome Lucas Hood and Kai Proctor are!” Jacob Chandler Mississippi: “Hey Peter, I heard you were looking for a new show to watch and you have a list of criteria for what kind of show you want it to be. I’m not sure if this show meets all the criteria but it’s definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already. I would highly recommend looking at Amazon Prime’s Patriot. It’s a dark comedy about a U.S. spy coming to Luxembourg to interfere with the Iranian election. And as generic and uninteresting as that sounds, it is actually one of the better shows in the “sad hitman” genre. It’s really quirky with a very complex plot and a whole lot of ridiculousness somehow wrapped up in a decent emotional struggle. Check out at least the first three episodes and if you don’t like it by then you probably won’t be able to get into it. But I highly recommend it. Love the show” Matt Y: “Long time listener, first time writer as they say. Love the show! Last week you guys discussed super hero one-offs and a couple of other examples of one of style shows like Black Mirror. I wanted to recommend that you check out an episode or two of Room 104 on HBO. The first season from the Duplas brothers was zainey and unexpected. Each half hour episode takes place in the same nondescript motel room. The era, visitors, and metaphysical rules are always different. The first season episodes split pretty evenly into a third of the episodes as ju Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Guardians 3, Galaxy's Edge, Big Trouble In Little China remake, Star Wars Episode 9 & Russo Brothers

On the August 27, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Scirettais joined by senior writer Ben Pearsonand writer Chris Evangelista to read some responses in the Mail Bag and talk about the latest film and tv news, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, Disney's Streaming service, Big Trouble In Little China remake, Star Wars Episode 9, and The Russo Brothers next film. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotifyand all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSSURL if you need it). Opening Banter: Our usual Monday Watercooler episode will happen tomorrow instead due to our usual contributors being away.   In The Mail Bag: Last week we talked briefly about the worst films we’ve seen this year (so far) and asked if there were any that we missed. Here are your responses: Brian from Wichita, Kansas says “As a huge horror movie fan, there have been some spectacular experiences in 2018 such as A Quiet Place, some disappointments like Winchester and some rotten apples like Truth or Dare.   This being said, I give the RottenPasta award to Slender Man.  So much urban legend potential to bring this story to life but alas, this movie has weak dialogue, bland cinematography and worst of all, it isn't scary.   My biggest disappointment of the year so far.“ Matt from Connecticut says “I saw SUPERFLY with my MoviePass. What a steaming pile. Amateurish, terribly written and acted, with the most ridiculous, adolescent fantasy sex scene I’ve ever seen. Pure garbage.” Chase D from Ohio says “ So I just checked my Letterboxd diary for 2018 and it is telling me that I’ve seen 99 movies already... wow. Haha. 78 unique movies, and these are the ones I scored a 4/10 or worse:  - Proud Mary - Death Wish - The 15:17 to Paris - A Wrinkle in Time - Super Troopers 2 - Overboard - Life of the Party - Action Point And the winner of the worst scored movie of 2018 (so far) for me, with a 2/10, was Gotti. And I will be honest and say that the score is biased. It was filmed in my hometown, I worked on it, and I even was a background extra and made it into the final cut! So.. a 2/10 is probably too high, but I saw myself on a movie screen so sue me.😂😂” Will M says “This past weekend I watched Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. It was absolutely brutal. As an S. Craig Zahler fan, man was I disappointed.” Sean from Missouri writes “I just wanted to chime in with my picks for the worst movies of the year. I haven't seen a ton of movies this year but so far for me, it was definitely Maze Runner 3: The Death Cure and The Meg, hands down. The former had me questioning what I have been doing with my life, and the latter had me welcoming the sweet release of death. Also, since Brad mentioned Netflix movies, I haven't seen very many at all but that new John Woo movie was pretty awful. I actually didn't hate The Cloverfield Paradox as much as some people. I mean, it was bad but it was just kind of like "meh, whatever" bad. Anyway, I really enjoy the podcast and I have been listening almost since you guys started it. Hope you are doing well!”   In The News: Chris: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ On Hold In Wake of James Gunn Firing Ben: Disney is Tweaking The Millennium Falcon Ride at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Chris: Netflix May Stop Mailing Movies By 2022, But 3 Million People Still Have DVD Plans Chris: Disney Streaming Service Gets an Official Name, Will Cost Less Than Netflix Ben: Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Won’t Be a Remake, But a Continuation Chris: Dominic Monaghan Joins ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Ben: The Russo Brothers to Direct ‘Cherry’ After ‘Avengers 4’   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into th Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The Worst Movies We've Seen This Year, Death Note 2, Top Gun 2, The Happytime Murders, Wonder Woman 1984, DC Universe

On the August 23, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by weekend editor Brad Oman and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to read some responses in the Mail Bag and talk about the latest film and tv news, including Death Note 2, Top Gun 2, The Happytime Murders, Wonder Woman 1984 composer, and the DC Universe.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). In The Mail Bag: Yesterday we asked you to write in to suggest which filmmakers you’d like to see as Funko POP figures. First up Peter asks Brad: What directors would you like to see as Pop figures?   Rob M from Maryland would “love to see a Wes Craven pop wearing a Freddy sweater while holding a scream mask.  Or Peter Jackson with a one ring necklace.” Jordan F from Toledo OH: “I would love to see a Quentin Tarantino funko pop. With the huge forehead and slicked back brown hair in a pulp fiction black suit.” Kolin S from San Jose, CA: You gotta have a Coen Brothers 2 pack  and Alejandro G. Iñárritu Alfonso Cuarón  Maybe a 3 amigos 3 pack with those two and Guillermo Del Toro   Eric S from Grand Prairie, TX: “Tim Burton is distinguishable enough to have his own Funko Pop.” Carl M from Christchurch New Zealand: “How about Peter Jackson (New Zealand dominating hollywood) and David Lynch and Christopher Nolan” Scott A: “I have a director you definitely overlooked. I think after Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick is an obvious next choice. Distinctive features, a huge fan following, and a filmmaker that truly impacted cinema, I think it's a great option if his estate would ever sign off of the idea.” Ivan H suggests a Japanese masters series Kurosawa, Ozu, Miyazaki, & Takahata. Aaron from Kentucky: “One person that immediately sprang to mind was John Carpenter. I believe he has a unique look that would translate well to the toy and enough of a cult following to make for a popular Funko Pop.  Another director who would look good as a Funko Pop is Spike Lee. Put him in some wild colors and add the glasses and it will fly off shelves!  And finally, I’d like to see a Funko Pop to honor the late great Stanley Kubrick. He has a unique look and made so many great films that it’s a no brainer he should be honored with his own figure.” Josh in Charlotte NC: “The following distinctive-looking directors would make great figures no matter the style.   Tim Burton David Lynch Clint Eastwood Ridley Scott Francis Ford Coppola Stanley Kubrick Akira Kurosawa David Cronenberg Chris Nolan Quentin Tarantino James Cameron John Woo Peter Jackson Steven Soderbergh Ron Howard Coen Brothers Spike Lee Oliver Stone Woody Allen Ed Wood”   In The News: HT: Netflix is Developing a ‘Death Note’ Sequel Brad: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Taking Jon Hamm and Ed Harris to The Danger Zone HT: ‘The Happytime Murders’ Early Buzz: This Could Be the Worst Movie of the SummerPeter asks everyone “what do you think is the worst movie of the year so far that you’ve seen?” Brad: Hans Zimmer Composing ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Score HT: DC Universe to Launch Its Own Daily Show Hosted By Kevin Smith All the other stuff you need to know:   You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes.   /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (RSS).   Please feel free to send your feedback, questions, comments and concerns to us at peter@slashfilm.com. How To Attend Film Festivals, Computer Screen Movies, Jason Bourne TV Series, Unmade Catwoman Movie

How To Attend Film Festivals, Computer Screen Movies, Jason Bourne TV Series, Unmade Catwoman Movie

On the August 17, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by managing editor Jacob Hall, and writer Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest film and TV news, including an unmade Catwoman movie, a Jason Bourne tv series and are computer screen movies the future of cinema? And in The Mailbag, we’ll answer a question about what you should know if you want to attend a film festival. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: Peter was gone at a Magic convention for a week and then got very sick, but is back. In The News: Chris - Here’s What a ‘Catwoman’ Solo Movie Starring Michelle Pfeiffer Could Have Been About Jacob - ‘Jason Bourne’ Spin-Off Series ‘Treadstone’ Coming to USA Chris - Timur Bekmambetov Developing 14 Computer Screen Movies, Is The Format the Future of Cinema or Is He Nuts?   In The Mailbag: Shaun K writes in: “Hello Peter and the gang,  I have a question about film festivals. My wife and I love going to the movies together. I’d list our bonafides but you don’t care about that stuff and it’d just be a thinly veiled list designed to culminate in the fact that we had an awesome wedding in an art house theater. Oh darn, look at that, it slipped in there.  Anyway, every year we try to take a vacation, last year it was Disney, this year was Ireland but I’ve had an idea to try to go to one of the bigger cooler film festivals. The problem with that though is that I really know nothing about them. I see a lot of headlines and early reviews coming out of things like Sundance and TIFF and South By but I really have no clue on how one goes about getting tickets to such a thing or if you have to be a working media member or anything. So I’m looking for your opinions on the best festivals that we could go to as just fans of films. We aren’t looking to necessarily see the next Un Chien Andalou so nothing too crazy artsy.   Now one small caveat to this is that my wife is a teacher so our only real window to go to one of these festivals is in the summer. Also, we live in Philly so if there’s anything that doesn’t require a cross-country flight that’d be great too. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.   I love the podcast and the website, thanks so much for the hours of entertainment and information.” All the other stuff you need to know:   You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes.
