Mailbag: Is Star Wars Aging Up? Christmas Movies, TV Show Recommendations, Release Date Calendars & More

On the December 13, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor in chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to answer questions in the Mail Bag. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: Peter plug’s his feature today: Keto at Disneyland: How to Eat Low Carb at Walt’s Original Magic Kingdom Feedback: Mike from Yonkers writes in “Hey Slashfilm crew, After seeing the officially announced cast for "The Mandalorian", I have to say I'm quite surprised at how old it is. It's the first live action Star Wars property to not have anyone in their principle cast younger than 35. I did some math and the average age of the cast is 54 years old, much higher than any of Disney's SW films (TFA and Solo are the youngest at 38, TLJ and Episode IX at 41, and Rogue One at 44). What do you think this says about the show itself? Do you think some of the oldest cast members have long contracts? I'm not trying to imply anything morbid, just wondering if someone of an older age wants to be tied up with a multi-season show for a number of years. I'm really excited for what this could mean. With Dave Filoni's involvement, I've already wondered if we'd see the return of some of his Clone Wars characters. Maybe some of these actors will portray older versions of them. Thanks again for a great podcast! Mike from Yonkers Note: For the averages, I only used the ages of non-returning actors. For example, Daisy Ridley was only used for TFA when she was introduced and not TLJ and IX.” Saul writes in “Hey guys, Just heard the episode where you discuss Netflix's new Instant Replay feature. I have had first hand experience with this feature. My daughter has been watching Moana or Coco about 10 times a day and there are times where she wants to rewind to listen to a song all over. About a few days ago I noticed that little box pop up that says "Replay Song" and have since shown my daughter that if she wants to listen to a song all over she can just press the enter button once it pops up. Needless to say it's a lifesaver. I haven't seen this feature pop up on any other movie or TV show. I don't know if it's just for the kids movie musicals, I for one am ok if it's just for that. Thanks for the show.” We asked for observations about the Avengers: Endgame trailer. Brian writes in “The way the title reveals itself, with the Avengers A bringing its own shattered pieces back together, almost like an explosion played in reverse, suggests to me that reversing time, or time travel in some way, is definitely a component of the story.” Jason from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia writes in “Hi Peter and Slash Film crew, I really enjoy listening to the podcast everyday, and thank you for all the awesome reviews, news, and coverage. I know I am many days late on sending in my thoughts around the Avengers 4 movie title but here I am. End Game as a title is fine, good, reflects the storyline and desperation and etc. However, I feel what probably will resonate best is Avengers: Assemble. In all 3 Avengers films, there has not been any “Avengers, assemble!” roll call by any character except for the very close one in Age of Ultron by Cap, but cut right at the moment he was about to say “assemble”. Calling it Avengers Assemble gives out that positive vibe and bound to resonate with fans who have been wanting to hear that out loud for the longest time. It is also literally assembling all the heroes for a final assault, and assembling both generations of Avengers and handing over the baton. Yeah, just my thought. Thank you!” Steve B writes in in response to our Christmas movie argument: “Most films are not just one genre. '21 Jump Street' is a comedy, but also an action movie. Shaun Of The Dead is a comedy but also a horror movie. In that vein, I say Die Hard is an Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

How Black Panther Changes The Future of the MCU, It: Chapter Two, The Push

On the February 20, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by weekend editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson, and writer Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest news, including The Push trailer, It: Chapter Two casting, and Black Panther’s insane box office success. We will likely see more black heroes on screen: Shuri as Ironheart? https://twitter.com/Bosslogic/status/964768497468239872 Blade? War Machine? Falcon? Assuming Cap, Thor, and Tony all die or don’t return after Avengers 4, this leaves T’Challa (and maybe Doctor Strange?) as the new face of the MCU and the new main box office draw. Along with Captain Marvel, this means a very, very different Phase 4 cast. Does this setup Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross in Captain Marvel? Is Everett K. Ross the new Agent Coulson? The whole world now has Wakanda’s overpowered tech, what does this mean for stakes in the MCU and Infinity War? Wakanda: the TV series? Ben - Why ‘Black Panther’ Doesn’t Contain Any Infinity Stones (also, “was this a spoiler?” discussion) Is the final infinity stone, The Soul Stone, on Wakanda? What's up with the purple flowers? Black-market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue smuggled large amounts of vibranium out of Wakanda and sold them on the black market. Was Howard Stark a buyer? First scene in BP is 1992, right after Howard’s assassination months earlier. Who might be a villain for the sequel? M’Baku starts out as a jealous villain attempting to take the throne of Wakanda for himself, only to be defeated by T’Challa, turning him into a reluctant ally. Could that alliance be short lived? Whereas when done right, it brings the authenticity to the work and a lot of respect for the makers.  The best example of Hindi accent done right! 1. The Hindi/Urdu used in the video, prepared by Ten rings terrorist declaring the kidnapping of Tony Stark, by Faran Tahir appears as Raza.  Also, the Hindi/Urdu spoken by Stark's fellow captive, (Shaun Toub as Yinsen) is understandably an accent spoken by someone who is not fully proficient and still learning.  Worst example of Hindi language in films is a scene in movie -   1. Avengers (Scene where Black Widow searches for Dr Banner, and a little girl approaches Dr Banner and talks in a bad accent) 2. The Russell Peters TV show on Netflix - Indian Detective, the lead actress has the worst accent of Hindi. (Alas, Russell Peters is of Indian descent)” Anders Reff from Oslo, Norway writes in, “Hollywood has portrayed the scandinavian and especially norwegian accent terribly wrong for many decades. By that i mean the accent we have while talking english. I understand why it ends up like that. They cant use resources on nailing that accent correct I mean, who cares, besides from us here up in the cold north.  It is especially annoying because the actual norwegian accent is quite funny and naive. The hollywood version: way over the top and everybody sounds like nutcases.   Wrong accent: norwegians visiting in a simpsons-episode  Right accent: thorbjorn jagland revealing obama as peace prize winner ( jeezes, did that really happen?)” And Eddie from Philadelphia writes in to say “I just listened to the February 14 episode of Slash Film Daily where you discussed "Den of Thieves 2".   I was one of the few people who did go see the movie (using my MoviePass), and I found it to be a pretty enjoyable action/heist movie. The ending to the film set up a sequel quite nicely so it doesn't surprise me that they're greenlighting a sequel.   Considering you saw "Geostorm", I think that it's worth using your MoviePass to go see. Although it's a long film, it's a great theater experience.”   In the News: ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ Drew Five Million Netflix Viewers in Its First Seven Days Is Paramount Rebooting The ‘Transformers’ Cinematic Universe?
