Mailbag: The Best Movie Apps, How To Watch More Movies, What To Eat At The Movies, and the Keto Diet

On the February 8, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor in chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, weekend editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson, and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to answer some reader emails. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: It’s a slow news day today. In The Mailbag: The other day we talked about how no one seems to want to direct James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Brian Thomas wrote in with a suggestion “Couldn’t Peyton Reed do it? Just team him up with the GotG2 art team and crew to get the world right, and hand him James Gunn’s script. I thought Ant-Man and the Wasp was every bit as good as GotG2. He clearly “gets” how to make a sci-fi action comedy with an ensemble cast. You’d just have to convince him to do it, I guess.” Koji from Tokyo, Japan writes in “Big fan of the podcast! Listening everyday!I have a question for you guys. What app do you use for tracking movies and TV series you've seen?”Are there any other movie apps that you use in some way worth mentioning? Greg M from Australia writes in “Love the show, have been listening for around a year now. I find the knowledge and enthusiasm displayed by you and the team really inspiring. Keeps me motivated to continue working on my own scripts, and reminds me that the world of cinema is more rewarding the closer you look. Which brings me to my question. Australia is not known for having exemplary or timely access to all the TV and movies that are out there, and even with the addition of streaming services, it's still an uphill battle. Now I'm not talking about finding obscure or dated titles, I'm talking about finishing off my watch list for 2018! I live in Brisbane - a city of over a million people - but even in a town this size, our cinemas don't show anything remotely obscure. Melbourne and Sydney aren't much better. One recent example is that only one cinema here showed 'Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot', and then only for about a week. And that is NOT an underground movie. That is not some festival film that "no one cares about". In 2018 I watched around 45 films from the year. I was floored to hear that Chris watched over 300. So my question to you then becomes: "How do I watch more movies in 2019?". I know there's no magic bullet solution but there has to be a way to see the films the cinemas won't show. Are there any industry tips or tricks you can share? I'd prefer to do it legally also - I have cinephile friends that just pirate movies they can't see elsewhere, but that sucks for everyone really. Please help me, it's fucking absurd that these things get made and then no one gets to watch them.” Derrek from Buffalo, NY writes in “Thanks for all the good listening this year. I wanted to pose to the slash film crew this question...when is the best time in a theater to eat your concessions? Do you eat your snacks during the previews? Some before, some during? It seems like I always end up eating them all before the movie starts. I hope to someday shake the hand of some of the dads I see exiting the theater with candy remaining after a 2.5 hr movie.... Keep up the good work.” Justin D from Dallas Texas writes in “I’m happy to hear that you’re having so much success with the Keto Diet. I am debating on a diet going into next year and was curious to know more about it. What is the meal planning like? Is it a difficult diet? How much exercise is needed and how does the diet make you feel?” All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. We will likely see more black heroes on screen: Shuri as Ironheart? https://twitter.com/Bosslogic/status/964768497468239872 Blade? War Machine? Falcon? Assuming Cap, Thor, and Tony all die or don’t return after Avengers 4, this leaves T’Challa (and maybe Doctor Strange?) as the new face of the MCU and the new main box office draw. Along with Captain Marvel, this means a very, very different Phase 4 cast. Does this setup Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross in Captain Marvel? Is Everett K. Ross the new Agent Coulson? The whole world now has Wakanda’s overpowered tech, what does this mean for stakes in the MCU and Infinity War? Wakanda: the TV series? Ben - Why ‘Black Panther’ Doesn’t Contain Any Infinity Stones (also, “was this a spoiler?” discussion) Is the final infinity stone, The Soul Stone, on Wakanda? What's up with the purple flowers? Black-market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue smuggled large amounts of vibranium out of Wakanda and sold them on the black market. Was Howard Stark a buyer? First scene in BP is 1992, right after Howard’s assassination months earlier. Who might be a villain for the sequel? M’Baku starts out as a jealous villain attempting to take the throne of Wakanda for himself, only to be defeated by T’Challa, turning him into a reluctant ally. Could that alliance be short lived? On the February 16, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film senior writer Ben Pearson, and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest news, including Cloverfield Paradox viewership, Transformers universe reboot, a Dr. Seuss biopic, the Fullmetal Alchemist trailer, a killer teddy bear movie and the first reviews for Wes Anderson’s next film Isle of Dogs.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   At the Water Cooler: Ben has been away in Mexico.   The Mailbag follow-up: Dhaval Panchal writes in, “The problem with the bad accent in movies is that it pulls you out and makes you realise that how the makers are lazy. Whereas when done right, it brings the authenticity to the work and a lot of respect for the makers.  The best example of Hindi accent done right! 1. The Hindi/Urdu used in the video, prepared by Ten rings terrorist declaring the kidnapping of Tony Stark, by Faran Tahir appears as Raza.  Also, the Hindi/Urdu spoken by Stark's fellow captive, (Shaun Toub as Yinsen) is understandably an accent spoken by someone who is not fully proficient and still learning.  Worst example of Hindi language in films is a scene in movie -   1. Avengers (Scene where Black Widow searches for Dr Banner, and a little girl approaches Dr Banner and talks in a bad accent) 2. The Russell Peters TV show on Netflix - Indian Detective, the lead actress has the worst accent of Hindi. (Alas, Russell Peters is of Indian descent)” Anders Reff from Oslo, Norway writes in, “Hollywood has portrayed the scandinavian and especially norwegian accent terribly wrong for many decades. By that i mean the accent we have while talking english. I understand why it ends up like that. They cant use resources on nailing that accent correct I mean, who cares, besides from us here up in the cold north.  It is especially annoying because the actual norwegian accent is quite funny and naive. The hollywood version: way over the top and everybody sounds like nutcases.   Wrong accent: norwegians visiting in a simpsons-episode  Right accent: thorbjorn jagland revealing obama as peace prize winner ( jeezes, did that really happen?)” And Eddie from Philadelphia writes in to say “I just listened to the February 14 episode of Slash Film Daily where you discussed "Den of Thieves 2".   I was one of the few people who did go see the movie (using my MoviePass), and I found it to be a pretty enjoyable action/heist movie. The ending to the film set up a sequel quite nicely so it doesn't surprise me that they're greenlighting a sequel.   Considering you saw "Geostorm", I think that it's worth using your MoviePass to go see. Although it's a long film, it's a great theater experience.”   In the News: ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ Drew Five Million Netflix Viewers in Its First Seven Days Is Paramount Rebooting The ‘Transformers’ Cinematic Universe? Couldn’t the producers do a cursory check on such a big budget movie? ... Does it annoy you to hear a person using the wrong dialect?
