WandaVision Early Buzz, Deadpool 3, Secret Invasion, Marvel Phase 4, Black Widow, Black Panther 2 & Mor

On the January 11, 2021 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film weekend editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to discuss the latest film and tv news, including all the news coming out of the WandaVision junket, including WandaVision early buzz, updates from Kevin Feige on Deadpool 3, Secret Invasion, Marvel Phase 4, Black Widow, Black Panther 2 and more. Opening Banter: In The News: Brad: ‘WandaVision’ Early Buzz: Marvel’s Series Is Funny, Sharp, Bizarre and Unlike Anything in the MCUHT and Peter give their reactions. Brad runs down a few more reactions. Ben: ‘WandaVision’ Has More VFX Shots Than ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Will Feature Some of Marvel’s Biggest Setpieces Brad: Here’s How the Marvel Studios Shows on Disney+ Were Influenced by ‘The Mandalorian’“It was wonderful to see the amazing job that Disney did and Disney marketing did in “event-izing” that— that was one of the things I was always concerned about, we wanted to ‘event-ize,’ we want to make people understand these projects at Disney+ are as important as the projects going into theaters, and we want to feel that same excitement. … And also the fun, week-to-week discussion, which I guess happens on all week-to-week television, but sometimes the series drop all at once on the streaming services. And Disney, I think, was very smart to do the week-by-week [release], because that conversation that happens every week between episodes, I think it’s very important and frankly, is just fun.” Do you ever think Disney was planning for a binge model? Mention: Kevin Feige Hopes ‘WandaVision’ Will Expand the Definition of What a Marvel Studios Project Can Be Ben (og Chris): Marvel Phase Four Hasn’t Been Affected by the Pandemic, According to Kevin Feige“If the run we had in 2018 and 2019 had gotten disrupted this way, in the buildup to Endgame, it would have been a bigger headache,” Feige said. “With these projects, it worked well,” and added that “he debut dates for the upcoming Disney+ shows shifted only “by a matter of weeks.” As of now, Black Widow is set to open May 7, 2021, followed by Shang-Chi on July 9, 2021, Eternals on November 5, 2021, and Spider-Man 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) arriving December 17, 2021. Meanwhile, Disney+ will debut Falcon and the Winter Soldier on March 19, 2021, while Loki will premiere sometime in May. HT: ‘Black Widow’ is on Course for Theaters, ‘Black Panther 2’ Won’t Feature a CGI Chadwick Boseman, Kevin Feige SaysWill Black Widow hit theaters in may 2021? Brad: Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Series Will be Smaller Than the Comic, but Will be “a Showcase” for Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelson “Well, there were more characters in the Secret Invasion comic series than there were in Endgame so, no. It’s not that but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took. So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than Endgame?'” HT: ‘Deadpool 3’ Will be Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Confirms Kevin Feige“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.” Can Deadpool really exist within the MCU? Who would we love to see Deadpool interact with? Mailbag: Producer/Executive Producer Differences, Review Writing Process, Film Adaptations, Halloween Plans, Translated Interviews & More

Mailbag: Producer/Executive Producer Differences, Review Writing Process, Film Adaptations, Halloween Plans, Translated Interviews & More

On the October 19 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to answer reader e-mail in the Mail Bag. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: HT talks about doing an interview with a translator. In The Mailbag: Chris from Ohio writes in: What are your plans for Halloween?” Britton from Louisville KY writes in: “What is the difference between a producer and an executive producer? Do they both get best picture oscars if their movie wins?” An Executive Producer is the top executive of the operations, whereas the producer is the manager of the operations. The executive producer prepares the budget and acquires the investors, while the producer makes sure how the budget is properly utilized. The producer hires the people with the right talents and skills for the movie where the producer himself is hired by the Executive Producer.  For the most part, the executive producer has very little to do with the hiring process, aside from hiring the producer. The producer is on set for the entire production (although some films have multiple producers, technical producers and a creative producers), the executive producer is not on set all the time but is used in more of an advisory capacity, overseeing the scripts and marketing. A producer is always eligible for awards in the industry, on the other hand, the Executive producer is not eligible for awards. Sometimes an executive producer is more of a credit than a job. Peter explains: Damon P. from St. Louis, MO writes in “I was wondering, since many of the team reads books that are movies or will eventually be movies, if they believe that breaking up a film into two parts (think Deathly Hallows, or Mockingjay) to make a book more complete in film format is a good thing.  So many times we hear “The book is better” why is that? Is that because the movies are limited by time, to incorporate additional plots points or anything like that. Would it be better to break a movie into two (or three) parts in order to give the source material it’s due?” Leanne R. from LA writes in “Here’s a quick mailbag question that occurred to me as I was listening to the 12/21 episode: what are the best films directed by & starring the same person? (or to widen the field, including the director as a minor role? e.g., Tarantino or Mel Gibson films)”Peter: Well first of all I think we should discount cameos (M Night, Tarantino...etc). Ben Affleck (Town, Argo) although I feel when hes not in the movie his films are better (Gone Baby Gone) HT: Citizen Kane, Life is Beautiful Chris: Unforgiven, A Star Is Born, Dick Tracy, Do The Right Thing Jacob: Citizen Kane, Unforgiven, lots of Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin movies Ben: The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, A Quiet Place, Rocky sequels Drew from Houston, TX writes in “Hey /Film Daily team,  I really enjoyed the conversation about becoming a film writer. I had another question taking that one step further for those on the site who write reviews: what is your process? Obviously it's hard to take notes when watching a film in theaters. Do you create an outline before diving into a review? Does Chris take notes when reviewing tv shows or blu-rays before writing his review? Just curious to hear a little more about the process.  Thanks!” All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. Feedback: The other day I wondered why there were so many baseball movies in the early 1990’s, and /Film listener Rob G proposed the following theory: “when you were asking why there were so many baseball movies in early 90’s, MLB rented them out in off-season 1993 and then they had a strike and without games used stadiums for revenue in 1994”   In The News: HT: Netflix Plans to Keep Making Marvel Shows for the Foreseeable Future HT: Jason Blum Apologizes for “Dumb” Comments About Female Directors Ben: Captain Marvel’s Comic Book Origin Story Has Been Revamped to Match the Movie HT: ‘It Takes Two’: The Property Brothers Are Getting Their Own Scripted Comedy Series at Fox Ben: Abandoned Rambo vs. Monster Movie Getting Made as Non-‘Rambo’ Movie, Sylvester Stallone Still Starring HT: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Early Buzz: Rami Malek Will Rock You, the Rest of the Movie Not So Much All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. On the October 17 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film senior writer Ben Pearson and writer Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest film and tv news, including Blumhouse, Fast & Furious, Real World, Annabelle 3, and They Live 2. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: Someone actually wrote in a question for Chris.   In Advice Corner with Chris Evangelista: Jacob Chandler from Mississippi writes in: “Hey guys!  I have an advice question for Chris and whoever else happens to be on the show. I listened to your response about film writing and whether or not you need to go to college to make it in that world. I have a follow up question about filmmaking itself. I’ve debated for a while on whether or not I need to go to college to be a filmmaker. I am currently taking a break from college now to think it over. I’m not sure if all the thousands of dollars in student loans and such is worth an education I could get myself from research and self application. Plus I have also heard that getting jobs in this field is similar to writing in that no one looks at your gpa or what college you went to. They look at your previous work. Can your answer on getting into film writing apply also to filmmaking as well? Or am I just crazy and I should pay the cost to get the career I want?  Thanks so much! I hope this becomes a regular segment.”   In The News: Chris: Jason Blum Horribly Explains Why There Are No Female Blumhouse Directors (Yet) Ben: ‘Fast & Furious’ Producer Neal Moritz Sues Universal Over ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ Chris: ‘Real World’ Reboot Coming To Facebook Watch Ben: ‘Annabelle 3’: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga Will Play the Warrens in Spinoff Sequel Chris: Potential ‘They Live’ Sequel Teased by John Carpenter All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.
