Ep. 381: First Woman to Kayak the Amazon from Source to Sea - Darcy Gaechter

Ep. 381: First Woman to Kayak the Amazon from Source to Sea - Darcy Gaechter

In 2013, Darcy Gaechter became the first woman (and vegan) to kayak the Amazon River from source to sea. With blistering lips and irradiated fingernails, her team of three paddlers tackled Class V whitewater for twenty-five days in a row; just barely survived a dynamite laden canyon being prepared for a hydroelectric dam, and pled for mercy at the hands of the murderous Ashaninka people who remained somewhat convinced we had come to steal their children's organs. In a desperate act meant to give me some pretense of control, Darcy cut off all of her hair just before they entered Peru’s notoriously violent “Red Zone.” The hope was to pass for a boy and be seen as less of a target. Despite all odds, they reached the Atlantic Ocean 4,300 miles and 148 days of kayaking later. Upon reaching the Atlantic, the three, an esoteric computer programmer from London, a vegan girl from Aspen, CO and her begrudging boyfriend who would become the first man to kayak the Amazon, “because his girlfriend made him”—became the first three people to kayak the entire Amazon. Darcy became the first woman to do it. Now, the same number of people have walked on the moon as have descended the Amazon from source to sea.

Ep. 1131: Europe by Horse for a Cause with Louis Hall

Ep. 1131: Europe by Horse for a Cause with Louis Hall

Louis D. Hall is a writer, public speaker, and founder of The Big Hoof, a Scottish-registered charity harnessing the power of long-distance horse journeys to champion mental health and wellbeing. Growing up in rural Scotland, Louis discovered his calling for epic travel early on. At 18, he trekked to northern Mongolia in search of the nomadic Tsaatan tribe, where his first encounters with horses ignited a lifelong affinity for their "connecting powers." This spark led to bolder quests: a solo 1,147-mile ride from Scotland to England's southern tip, raising £38,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust; and a grueling 111-day odyssey across Europe with his Arabian mare Sasha, blazing a pioneering trail through the snow-swept Ligurian Alps, storm-lashed Pyrenees, and partisan-haunted paths to Cape Finisterre, Spain—"the end of the land."https://www.thebighoof.com/Book: in Green: Two horses, Two Strangers, a Journey to the End of the Land - https://a.co/d/3CVfGLoOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASP* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 1127: Running Across Montana with Becca Boylan, Revisited

In this revisited episode, Mason visits with Becca Boylan, a fifth generation Montanan who completed a 475 miles run across her home state to share the story of her mother's fight against Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The inspiration for the run came after Becca's experience helping her mother fight the disease for the past year and using running as a way to "metabolize" the emotions she was going through.Through the metaphor of running, Becca, the oldest of six kids, hoped to show others that we are capable of far more than we think possible and we hold the strength we need to face any of life's challenges, whether it's a cancer diagnosis or a mountain marathon. Instagram: @beccaboylanThe Montana Run Website: https://gamma.app/docs/Join-The-Montana-RunOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASP* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
