This Doctor Healed Herself Through Diet S3E37

“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream, and find out why they’re falling in.” - Nelson Mandela

Hello Beautiful Human! Dr. Jocelyn Foran’s story is different. She’s not just a physician, she’s a longtime patient, too.

As a child, she watched and helped her mother battle rheumatoid arthritis. That’s what pushed Jocelyn toward medicine in the first place.

As an adult, she developed ulcerative colitis herself. Doctors told her diet had nothing to do with it, aside from one ingredient in processed dairy (carrageenan). Meanwhile, she had a career as an anesthesiologist and was raising three children, all while unintentionally losing weight, losing sleep, struggling to control her bowels, and watching her medication grow less effective by the day.

Then a colleague mentioned the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, developed to help with celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. She tried it. Within days, everything changed for the better. She moved on to Paleo, then Keto, and finally Carnivore.

Her gastroenterologist was supportive, but still promoted drugs. Jocelyn wishes the medical system understood diet as a foundational treatment, not an afterthought.

She mentions how Abraham Flexner’s 1910 report, reshaped medical school curriculums across North America, and locked in the “pills only” approach we still see today.

Dr. Foran tells us why glucose is so toxic to the body, and how Carnivore works by keeping carbs and insulin as low as possible. As her own health improved, she was able to taper off the now-failing medications she’d relied on for years.

Her larger point? Modern medicine is incredible at acute care. Broken bone, get it fixed. But chronic illness is a different story. They treat symptoms, not root causes. That’s exactly why she brings up Mandela’s “going upstream” quote.

Today, Dr. Foran has a metabolic coaching practice through her website Upstream Metabolic Medical (link below), and shares videos on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok about how very low carb and Carnivore diets can transform chronic illness.

Dr Foran is heading upstream, and she wants to bring all of us with her.

I’m on board. Are you?
