Some described the phenomenon as looking like daylight had suddenly and briefly returned to the nighttime sky. What makes this so strange is the timing. These lights appeared in the minutes and even hours before the magnitude seven point eight earthquake hit, an earthquake that would tragically claim according to official estimates around two hundred and fifty thousand lives, though some researchers believe the true number was much higher. There have been reports of similar glowing phenomena connected to other historic earthquakes as well, including sightings before the New Madrid earthquakes in the early eighteen hundreds and reports from Italy's Abruzzo earthquake in two thousand nine. Researchers have even attempted laboratory experiments squeezing igneous rocks under extreme pressure to see if they could recreate the kind of electrical discharge that might explain the glow, and while some experiments have produced small sparks under very specific conditions, nobody has definitively cracked the full mystery of why this happens on the scale witnesses describe in the sky.
