Why Patrick Clancy Got The Second Ambulance

On the third day of testimony in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, one of the most experienced defense attorneys in Massachusetts sat and watched witness after witness leave the stand without asking a single question.

Kevin Reddington thanked one Duxbury officer for his incredible service. He told the next one he had no questions. A retired firefighter finished ten minutes of testimony and walked off without any cross-examination at all.

That isn't carelessness. There's a reason, and it happened where the jury couldn't see it.

This episode covers what ten first responders described to a Plymouth jury about a Duxbury basement on January 24, 2023 — and the argument over whether they should have been allowed to describe it ten separate times. Before opening statements, Reddington moved to cap the testimony at one officer, one firefighter, one EMT. Anything past that, he argued, stops being evidence. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague answered that trimming the witness list means dropping the testimony about one of the three children, and asked him which one that would be. Judge William Sullivan cut her off, declined to rule in advance, and said he'd take it at sidebar when it came up live.

It came up live twice. Both times, the responders testified.

Also inside: the officer who carried a three-year-old out chest to chest and went back for more, the paramedic who rode to the hospital with an eight-month-old in her arms, the second ambulance called for the children's father, and a court day that ended at 12:07 in the afternoon because the state ran out of people to call.
