Gold Bar Courier Scam | How Social Engineering Steals Your Savings (EP81)

How the Gold Bar Courier Scam Reaches Your Front Door

In Episode 81 of Behind the Scams, Nick and Sue expose the gold bar courier scam, an alarming fraud that begins with a phone call, computer pop-up, or government impersonation—and ends with a stranger arriving at the victim’s home to collect cash or precious metals.

The gold bar courier scam usually begins when criminals claim that a victim’s computer, bank account, Social Security number, or identity has been compromised. The scammers may impersonate bank security representatives, technology-support employees, Federal Trade Commission officials, Treasury agents, FBI agents, or other government authorities.

Victims are pressured to keep the supposed investigation secret and are warned not to contact family members, bankers, attorneys, or local police. The criminals then instruct them to liquidate retirement accounts, savings, certificates of deposit, or investments and convert the money into gold bars, gold coins, or cash.

According to an FBI warning, victims were instructed to wire money to precious-metals dealers, receive the gold at home, and wait for a courier to collect it. From May through December 2023 alone, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $55 million in losses connected to this disturbing courier tactic.

Gold Bar Courier Scam Warning Signs

The gold bar courier scam depends on fear, secrecy, urgency, and convincing displays of authority. Warning signs include:

  • Someone claiming your money must be moved to a “safe account”
  • Instructions to purchase gold bars, precious metals, or large amounts of cash
  • A demand that you keep the transaction secret
  • Threats of arrest, account seizure, or criminal charges
  • Claims that your bank or local police department is compromised
  • A password, badge number, case number, or code word for a courier
  • Someone offering to collect money or gold from your home
  • Instructions to lie to bankers, precious-metals dealers, or family members

No legitimate government agency sends couriers to collect cash, gold, jewelry, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. The FBI, Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission, Social Security Administration, and Federal Reserve will never tell you to purchase gold and hand it to a stranger for safekeeping.

In this episode, Nick draws on his experience investigating financial crimes to explain how overseas callers, domestic couriers, handlers, money mules, and laundering networks work together. He also explains why passwords, badge numbers, serial numbers, and official-sounding procedures are merely theatrical devices intended to make the handoff appear legitimate.

The gold bar courier scam is especially dangerous because converting savings into physical assets removes many of the protections associated with banks, credit cards, and electronic transfers. Once a courier leaves with the package, stopping or recovering the money becomes significantly more difficult.

If you believe a gold bar courier scam is underway, stop communicating with the caller and immediately contact local law enforcement. Notify your bank, brokerage, credit union, or precious-metals dealer using a verified telephone number. Report the incident promptly to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov and preserve all phone numbers, messages, emails, receipts, courier descriptions, vehicle information, passwords, and transaction records.

Victims should never be blamed or shamed. These criminals are trained to manufacture fear, isolate their targets, and turn a person’s desire to protect their savings against them. Families can help by establishing a simple rule: no major financial transaction made under pressure without first pausing and consulting someone truste...
