What Was Sitting Behind Caleb Flynn's Garage Door That Night

Caleb Flynn told 911 that an intruder broke into his Tipp City, Ohio, home through the garage and shot his wife Ashley twice in the head. He told officers he was in the next room with their daughters. He told them his 9mm handgun was stolen from his truck in the garage. Prosecutors allege none of it happened the way Caleb described. They allege he shot Ashley himself and staged the entire house to look like a break-in.

The evidence that allegedly shattered his story starts in the garage. Officers found the side door open -- the door Caleb said the intruder used. But a large refrigerator was sitting in front of it on the inside. The court affidavit says it would have had to be pushed to open that door. If no one moved the refrigerator, no one came through that door. Caleb was arrested within 82 hours. A Miami County grand jury indicted him on 11 charges including aggravated murder.

Ashley Flynn was 37. She coached seventh-grade volleyball at Tippecanoe Middle School. She was a substitute teacher. She posted Valentine's Day photos of herself and Caleb on Facebook on February 14. She was dead on February 16. Their daughters were asleep when it happened. Those daughters are on both sides' witness lists and are described as crucial to Caleb's alibi.

Defense attorney L. Patrick Mulligan says the prosecution cannot prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. He says investigators rushed to arrest the surviving spouse. Both sides have forensic experts. The trial is expected to last two to three weeks with over a hundred witnesses. The jury will visit the house. This is the complete case before testimony starts -- both sides, all the evidence, and the detail inside that garage that could decide everything. Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty.
