Ep. 1017: Boating the Mekong River in Thailand - Alonzo Guess

Ep. 1017: Boating the Mekong River in Thailand - Alonzo Guess

Dive into a riveting tale of adventure and self-discovery on this episode of Adventure Sports Podcast. Meet Alonzo, whose thirst for exploration was ignited early on by his father's sage advice and travel stories. From a few eye-opening international trips to a transformative semester in Thailand, Alonzo's passion for travel only grew stronger after graduation.

But it wasn't until he embarked on an epic journey with two childhood friends that his wanderlust truly took flight. Saving up every penny, they ventured back to Thailand, determined to uncover its hidden treasures. Little did they know, their path would lead them to the remote reaches of northern Thailand, where a chance encounter with a wooden boat in Chang Kong changed everything.

Against all odds (and arguably the hardest part of the adventure), they convinced locals to sell them a wooden boat, setting the stage for an unforgettable expedition down the legendary Mekong River. For ten exhilarating days, they navigated its dangerous waters, camping under the stars along the riverbank.

Join us as we unravel the gripping tale of Alonzo's journey over twenty years later, where the call of adventure and the spirit of exploration collide for these young friends in the heart of Southeast Asia's fabled Golden Triangle.

Ep. 902: Kayaking The Inside Passage - Chris Whittaker

Ep. 902: Kayaking The Inside Passage - Chris Whittaker

You may recognize Chris from episode 618, talking about being a full-time adventure guide. He’s back to chat about an epic 72-day sea kayak expedition of the Inside Passage, the 1,200-mile paddle trail from Seattle to Skagway, Alaska. Chris said it was a logistical nightmare in terms of organization, especially due to covid disruptions. However, it paid off with truly wild animal encounters, humpbacks surfacing feet from their kayaks, being 'bumped' by killer whales, and camping in grizzly bear country. On top of that, Chris has changed roles from guide to expedition business owner. Not long after coming home from this adventure, he turned around to guide groups to summited Kilimanjaro twice! Chris’ first episode on Adventure Sports Podcast: https://www.adventuresportspodcast.com/2020/03/ep-618-epic-life-of-full-time-adventure.htmlHis other links:For Fun’s Sake Expedition YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ffsexpeditionwww.global-shenanigans.comIG: @global_shenanigansSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 901: First Woman to Circumnavigate the World on Motorcycle - Revisited - Elspeth Beard

Ep. 901: First Woman to Circumnavigate the World on Motorcycle - Revisited - Elspeth Beard

Originally aired - July 31, 2017In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6.Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today.Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure. Her website: www.elspethbeard.comThe Book: www.bookdepository.com/Lone-Rider-Elspeth-Beard/9781782438045Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
