Ep. 1050: Climbing the 50 U.S. Highpoints in 50 Days with Type 1 Diabetes - Revisited - Michael Shelver & Patrick Mertes

Originally published September 2, 2019

Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50

They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.

Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.

Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Ep. 796: Thirteen Years Living at Sea and Counting - Revisited - Brian Trautman

Originally aired August 16, 2019Have you ever wanted to just quit your job, sell your house and head out on an adventure for a decade? Yeah, me too. Today we chat with someone who actually did that and is still doing it, Brian Trautman. After being unsatisfied with the “perfect job”, house, car, etc., he came across a book about sailing across the ocean and knew that was what he needed to do with his life. He sold everything he owned, bought a boat, and sailed to New Zealand from Seattle. That first experience started a trend that would extend for more than a decade and lead to countless adventures that have been chronicled on his YouTube channel: Sailing SV Delos, gaining over 100 million views in the process. To date, Brian has visited 6 continents, 40 countries, and crossed every ocean on his 53 foot Ketch. Enjoy!youtube.com/svdelosInstagram: @svdelosFacebook: @svdelosCheck out Power7.com for all your ski needs! Ep. 795: The Importance of Microadventures - Revisited - Alastair Humphreys

Originally aired June 28, 2019Alastair Humphreys is an adventurer, author, and motivational speaker. His first big adventure was completing a four-year bicycle journey around the world that consisted of 46,000 miles of cycling and changed his life forever. After the trip, he popularized the idea of microadventures - short, local, accessible adventures for the average person.  This idea helped him achieve becoming a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2012. Alastair is a huge inspiration of mine and I hope you enjoy our conversation about life, parenting, and the delicate balance between normal life and pursuing adventure.Alastair's books; https://alastairhumphreys.com/shop/AlastairHumphreys.comInstagram: @AL_HUMPHREYSSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Check out Power7.com for all your ski needs! Ep. 793: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail & Walking Across America…Barefoot - Ron Zaleski

Ep. 793: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail & Walking Across America…Barefoot - Ron Zaleski

Back in 1972, Marine veteran Ron Zaleski decided to take off his shoes in honor of the fallen members of his squadron from the Vietnam war. He doesn’t know exactly why not wearing shoes was his answer of how to deal with the grief and guilt but the fact remained that he never put them back on and he had never told anyone why he went barefoot. That is until one day a little boy asked him why he wasn’t wearing shoes… That boy was the first person Ron had told about why he was living barefoot in over 30 years. Ron immediately saw his dedication to ‘barfootness’ as a way to raise awareness and honor his fallen friends in a much more impactful way. Not long after, Ron set out on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and a coast-to-coast walk across the US with no shoes at all to honor and raise awareness for the many challenges veterans face when returning home. His stories are endless, captivating, and amazingly told. To learn more about Ron’s story and to buy his book, The Long Walk Home, visit his website, TheLongWalkHome.org, or buy it on Amazon here. Support Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here.
