Ep. 1050: Climbing the 50 U.S. Highpoints in 50 Days with Type 1 Diabetes - Revisited - Michael Shelver & Patrick Mertes

Originally published September 2, 2019

Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50

They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.

Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.

Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Ep. 700: Two-Time Olympic Skier - Kaylin Richardson

The rugged mountains of Utah, Colorado, and California are usually the homes of the names we see every four years on some of the biggest slopes and stages at the Winter Olympics. That wasn’t the case for Kaylin. She cut her teeth on a 125 ft. hill in Minnesota, mastering the fundamentals. From those humble beginnings, she advanced her skills enough to represent the U.S. Olympic team twice! It took living a life without compromise for her to reach the heights she has. Since her “retirement” at 25, she has pursued other interests like being a mom and being featured in eight Warren Miller ski films. Her story is inspiring and her love for the winter will get you excited for the season! Her Instagram: @kaylinrichardsonShop Athletic Brewing's award-winning non-alcoholic beer here. Our Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASPSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 698: The Rise of Backcountry Skiing - Andrew Drummond

Ep. 698: The Rise of Backcountry Skiing - Andrew Drummond

The mountains of New Hampshire have brought many exciting experiences to Andrew Drummond. Growing up in the area Andrew has been training his whole life, without knowing it, to be a defining source of knowledge, gear, and stoke for backcountry skiing in the Northeast. After stints skiing and surfing out west, even going up to Alaska to alpine tour, Andrew was ready to come home and spread the stoke in his own backyard. After refamiliarizing himself with the White Mountains that he still calls home, the constant questioning from like-minded folks wanting to know the best places to go just off the beaten path, as well as folks wanting to dip their toes in this new backcountry craze, led Andrew down a path he never thought he’d lead...retail. Having opened his shop, Ski the Whites, to help satiate the area’s needs, the growth of community and adventure has only risen as well. Now outfitting folks for skiing, biking, and runnings, the shop has even begun dabbling in coffee to further meet folks where they are with what they with the focus always being on a solid community. On top of owning and operating an outfitting company, Andrew serves on the board of the Granite Backcountry Alliance and he joins today to tell us about his journey and impact on and off the mountain. Enjoy. Find out more about Andrew:Instagram: @sr_drummondBusiness: @ski_the_whitesSkithewhites.comLearn more about Athletic Brewing’s Two For The Trails program here. Our Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASPSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
