Ep. 536: Building the First Climbing School in Iraq - Ryan Shuler and Milosz Pierwola

Ep. 536: Building the First Climbing School in Iraq - Ryan Shuler and Milosz Pierwola

Imagine taking the adventure sport you love and being among the first to teach that sport in a part of the world that hasn't been possible until recently. That’s exactly what adventurer Milosz Pierwola and veteran Ryan Shuler are accomplishing in Iraq. Their plan is to build the first climbing school in Iraq in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdish Mountains. They’re fundraising to gather professional climbing equipment as well as build a climbing wall with local aspiring climbers, who have self-learned to climb solely from videos found on the internet. I hope you enjoy the story behind this epic project!

Also, if you can, get involved!

From the project’s website:

Our project will establish the first climbing school in the country of Iraq, creating gateways where a culture once saw barriers, through their indomitable mountains. Classes will focus on rock climbing and mountaineering skills that will enable expeditions to discover the as of yet unclimbed local peaks. The program will take place in a successful community center established in 2007 that services over 1,500 children and adults. It will be headed by a group of Iraqi mountaineers who have overcome great adversity, such as forging their own gear, to learn how to climb. The facility is equipped with classrooms, theater/cinema, internet, and most importantly, 5 hectares/12 acres of land upon which we will construct a 9 m/30 ft tall climbing wall. In addition to the wall, we will deliver a complete assortment of climbing equipment and publish the first native language mountaineering instructional book, Basic Principles of Mountaineering, translated from French.”

Ep. 633: Survivor Winner - Ethan Zohn

Ethan knows what it takes to survive. He’s faced cancer twice, lost his father at the age of 14, had teammates die of AIDS while playing professional soccer in Africa, and has won the reality show Survivor: Africa. Today Ethan is joining Without Compromise to talk about what it means to survive difficult situations and ultimately use those tragedies for good in a principle he calls “never letting a crisis go to waste”. For example, when he won the $1 million prize for Survivor: Africa he decided to use the money to start Grassroot Soccer, an adolescent health organization that uses the popularity of soccer to educate at-risk youth all over the world. To date, they’ve educated over 2 million young people through their program.Ethan was most recently on Survivor Season 40: Winners at WarInstagram: @ethanzohnHis websites:Grassroot SoccerEthanZohn.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASPSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 632: World Record Highlining - Ari DeLashmutt

Ep. 632: World Record Highlining - Ari DeLashmutt

The world of highlining is often misunderstood as simply walking from one point to another across a thin webbing hundreds of feet in the air. While it is that, it’s so much more. Ari does an amazing job illustrating, even for the totally unfamiliar, the thrill, focus, and adventure of being out there on the line. Most of the episode revolves around him and his friend’s ridiculous accomplishment of highlinging 2 km across an abandoned asbestos mine in (appropriately enough) Asbestos, Quebec. The project was huge, ludicrous, and completely awesome. Enjoy. Video on the project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W2ya3oLHaYInstagram: @ariintheairHis colaboration with KEEN Footwear: www.keenfootwear.com/ambassadors/blog-article-18043.htmlPersonal website: ariintheair.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASPSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 629: Leaving Alaska - Update - Kristin Knight Pace

Ep. 629: Leaving Alaska - Update - Kristin Knight Pace

Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what Kristin did. That toughness eventually led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest 1000-mile sled dog race.Kristin is now remarried and has officially started a new journey, motherhood. Up until recently, she also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and also wrote a book about her experiences, This Much Country, which made the New York Times summer reading list in 2019. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books (she asks that you support your local bookstore). However, today’s episode is not about her life in Alaska. It’s about her and her family making the enormous change to restart their lives in Texas. Listen in to hear about how continuing to live in Alaska would have led to compromise and how a complete change in identity is sometimes the best direction to go. The book: This Much Countryhttps://www.heymoosekennel.com/Instagram: @heymoosekennelEpisode 505: Dog Sledding and Life in Alaska - Iditarod Racer, Kristin Knight PaceOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASPSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
