Ep. 865: Skiing Self-Supported to the South Pole with Your Husband - Revisited - Chris Fagan

Ep. 865: Skiing Self-Supported to the South Pole with Your Husband - Revisited - Chris Fagan

When Chris and Marty Fagan go on an adventure, they go big! From bike tours through Africa to racing sailboats in Alaska, the couple is a dynamic duo of adventurous spirit. Over the winter of 2013/2014, that spirit culminated in a 48-day ski expedition to the South Pole. Upon completion, they became the first American married couple (and second married couple in history) to complete a full unsupported, unguided, unassisted ski from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. In fact, they're two of just over 100 people in all of history to have traveled to the South Pole in that way.Chris is an amazing storyteller, and I hope you enjoy this conversation about two parents risking it all for a chance at an extraordinary adventure.  Chris' book about the trip, The Expedition: Two Parents Risk Life and Family in an Extraordinary Quest to the South Pole, comes out September 3, 2019. Originally aired - May 18, 2020After running her first marathon in Tokyo after the loss of her father, Liz grew a deep love of running as a form of therapy and exercise. She had a self-proclaimed “addiction” for the high of crossing the finish line after over 26 miles of running, especially in places that were far from her hometown of Atlanta. As she approached her 30th birthday while living in Paris, she decided to join her passion for travel and marathons into an adventure of a lifetime! She committed to run 30 marathons in 30 different countries by the time she turns 30 in June of 2020. Each marathon focused on a different charity and she’s currently raising $100,000 to donate to various causes. Laird is famous for surfing the biggest waves in the world and is largely considered to be the influence behind a number of surfing innovations. From popularizing stand-up paddle boarding, inventing hydrofoil boarding, and tow-in surfing, Laird is easily a face on the Mount Rushmore of surfing. Surfer Magazine has labeled Laird as, “the sport’s most complete surfer, displaying almost unnerving expertise in a multitude of disciplines, and flat out surfing’s biggest, boldest, bravest, and the best big wave surfer in the world today, bar none.”We sat down and chatted with Laird about what living Without Compromise means to him and how he maintains his innovation and zest for trying new things in the water. Athletic Brewing has also partnered with Laird in creating Superfood Swell, a collaboration beer with Laird’s Superfood, a refreshing tropical IPA.
