Ep. 373: Climbing in North Korea - Woolly Mammoths - Nepal & Siberia - George Kourounis

Ep. 373: Climbing in North Korea - Woolly Mammoths - Nepal & Siberia - George Kourounis

One of our favorite recurring guests, George Kourounis, is back on the show today. George recently returned from Nepal where he visited Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas to film a TV show. They decided to try visiting the base camp with no acclimatization. So they took a helicopter up with no time to adjust. George immediately experienced the effects of hypoxia during this trip. George was also fortunate enough to meet Kancha Sherpa on this helicopter ride. Kancha Sherpa is the last surviving member of Sir Edmond Hillary's 1953 expedition to be the first people to reach the summit of Everest.

On our last show with George, he was preparing to head to North Korea for a rare opportunity to mountain trek, climb and camp. He was approved by the government and was able to travel there in May of 2017. He fills us in on what it was like to be a western-world guest in this secretive country during tumultuous political times. His experience is an interesting one that most of us never get to hear much less experience. Listen in to hear about what the mountains and surroundings are like over there.

George tells about his continued trips to volcanoes including 11,384 ft Mt Nyiragongo which is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He explains that the lake nearby, Lake Kivu, which is susceptible to exploding due to the vast amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide at the bottom. The volcano holds the world's largest boiling lake of lava.

He traveled down the Road of Bones to visit a village in the middle of Siberia, Oymyakon, which is known as the coldest place on earth. He tells us a story about visiting a preserved woolly mammoth frozen in the permafrost and when no one was looking, George snapped off a little mammoth to have a taste. Listen in to hear what that experience was like for him.

Then we discussed the difficulty of ice climbing on icebergs to place satellite tracking devices on them for tracking the path of the icebergs as they float through the ocean.

It's never a dull hour when our friend George Kourounis joins us on the show.

Ep. 883: Using Financial Independence to Fuel a Life of Adventure - Revisited - Chris Mamula

Episode originally aired - July 12, 2019With any adventure, finances have to be part of the planning. That planning can begin months or years before the adventure even begins. Some folks decide to put it all on a credit card. Others knock on the door of hundreds of potential sponsors to pay for their trips while others just decide to suffer immensely on the adventure because of lack of funds (been there, done that). Doesn't it make more sense to build a frugal and thoughtful lifestyle that allows adventures to be more realistic, more often? Chris Mamula joins us today to talk about some very easy and key steps that anyone can do to help make adventures more possible in their lives.Chris is an avid adventurer and has achieved financial independence and decided to retire from physical therapy at age 41, giving him years of possible adventures for himself and his family. His blog: www.caniretireyet.comChris’ book: www.choosefi.com/bookSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 881: How Adventure Helps Us Start Over - Revisited - Sara Schulting-Kranz

Originally aired - February 22, 2019Seven years ago, Schulting-Kranz was living her life very much within the box. She hosted parties, watched her kids play sports, paddle boarded on the gorgeous coast of California near her home when one day her husband of 17 years admits he's been unfaithful to her for the last 14 years and came out as gay. Her life deteriorated in front of her eyes as she realized everything had to change. Not only was the news devastating, but it also rehashed old memories of being raped at 17 years old, which led to her first son.Sara didn't wallow in her sorrow but took the opportunity to pursue her dream to live a life connected to the outdoors and to show the healing power of nature to as many people as she possibly could.  Thus, Live Boldly Coaching was born and her story of pain has become one of strength and compassion with all sorts of adventures, like earning a Guinness World Record for leading her friend Shawn Cheshire to record the fastest rim-to-rim-to-rim run across the Grand Canyon by a blind person. No matter where she goes, she can now be found on mountaintops all around the country wearing a glamorous pair of bright red high heel shoes.Get out there and live boldly. www.liveboldlycoaching.comInstagram @saraschultingkranzwww.walkthroughthis.com - Documentary WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep. 878: Helping Others Find Careers in Adventure - Revisited - Courtney Condy

Originally aired - December 21, 2018Courtney Condy graduated college in 2013 and jumped right into the corporate sector thinking she would have time later to travel and pursue her adventures. She was wrong. After finding inspiration from a friend and none from her job, she finally booked an Everest Base Camp Trek in 2015. On that journey, she ended up almost dying in the April 25 Nepal earthquake. It was an adventure, to say the least. It changed her whole life to the point she opted out of her desk job and started working as an adventure travel guide all over the world.Earlier this year after seeing a gap in the adventure career market she decided to break away from her job, once again, to launch her own company, Occupation Wild, where he hopes of helping others find their dream job and live life beyond 9 to 5.www.occupationwild.comhttps://www.instagram.com/occupation_wild/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/courtneymcondy/?hl=enSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
